Conversations with Ms. Mia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ms. Mia

Hi Ms.Mia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Houston,Tx. R&B/ Hip-Hop, Singer-Songwriter. My name is Tamia Boykin, professionally known as “Ms.Mia” gradually got into music on my own, at the age of 11. At an early age, I was writing and singing my own songs over YouTube type beats, and recording demos on a C.D with my oldest brother. After sometime from reserving with openly showcasing my talents with my close family members, I started singing solo’s in church, which allowed me to embrace my independence and confidence. I knew deep inside I wanted to sing but took time to define myself into my own artistry and development .

Before graduating, my high school years consisted of me participating in varsity choir and talent shows. In (2018) I recorded a cover “Come See About Me” by Nicki Minaj, at Audible Studios. Reaching 50k plays in counting, I was not expecting so much love and motivated me to continue. In the year of (2020), I released my first debut single “Maybe” and Ep “Trust The Process”. In October (2022) I released my second single “Sweet”. Striving through over 1k in counting in streams, in the U.S alone from just Apple Music. Followed up in 2024, released one of my most vulnerable songs yet, filled with blissful melodies “Reset & Refocus”. This song embodies a reflection of peace, hope and a message filled with power of affirmations! Some of my favorite artists I’m truly inspired by is: Nicki Minaj,Summer Walker, Sevyn Streeter etc,.. I am continuing as an independent artist and appreciate anyone who listen to my music. My goals in the upcoming year is to grow with my fans and tap deeper into my creative style. Looking forward to better opportunities and releasing more music.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a journey throughout the years, of course you get to experience a lot of ups and downs, but you learn to be creative through everything and use it to your advantage. From relationships, mood or general perspectives I always find ways to express them in my writing process. It’s important for people to connect and relate to better than just a song to dance and sing to.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a singer songwriter and I create music. I’m proud of being myself and a strong independent woman I am today. What makes me stand out is that I take my time perfecting and not rushing. When I’m creating music I think ahead because, I want to make sure I make music that can live on forever. When someone hear my music for the first time they can fall in love and feel the mood of which ever song they’re listening to. Music is my therapy and it’s therapeutic. I have a balance of songs that can make you feel beautiful and that can make you feel important.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I believe we all need to take more time for ourselves, put our phones down more often, enjoy peace and quiet. Enjoy being in the house away from the public or with nature. Just to be free doing things that we don’t make time for because of social media and our daily routines in life.
