Conversations with Kamyra Ndango

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamyra Ndango

Hi Kamyra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It started in 2016 when I was inspired by some cool funky sweet slushy drinks in jars. I decided let me try to make some for me and my friends. Everyone loved them when I would post pictures online , & was questioned a lot if they were for sale . I made a batch a sold them quickly , it was a weekend hobby that turned into my full time job after 4 years . Before i opened the food truck, I would sell at festivals , parks , cater sweet 16s & mainly out of my home . It was such a popular hit in my home town of Omaha Nebraska , I couldn’t keep up .
Covid came unexpectedly and when everything closed . Surprise , we were open out of our home . I was working 10 hour shifts making fun eye catching drinks . After 2 months I was able to buy a trailer & convert it into a slushy truck. We managed to get everything done in 2 months and had our grand opening July 2020! Business was great with ALOT of learning with it . My family and I decided to move from Omaha Nebraska to Houston Texas with the slushy truck . Houston was a complete game changer and it has been amazing to the business . We truly love to serve all the mouth watering items we have on our menu across the huge state at all kind of events . Hoping to open up a second truck within the next year 🙃

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was a smooth road in the beginning kinda while we were in Omaha because we were familiar with everything .

Relocating the slushy truck after only being in business for almost a year, we knew we would face some difficulties. The first year was a struggle getting all the permits , finding locations to serve & making connections in the food truck world in a city we never been to . I was up for the challenge and didn’t give up even with me boxing full time . The second year was great and the thirds had been amazing . We figured out that schools , sports and family events were a huge hit for us . We absolutely love seeing the reactions when the customers faces when they receive their order .

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional boxer . I have been boxing for 6 years . That’s the other reason that brought us over to Texas . The journey has been
Fulfilling , difficult and amazing in all the same breathe .
I just turned professional summer of 2024 . Before that I had the opportunity to travel to different states and cities to compete in some international tournaments & shows . I also was a 2024 Olympic trialist . I train 5/6 days a week , sometimes 2x a day . I train at 2 different Awesome gyms around many talent coaches and other professionals .

I’m most proud of my ability to adapt to this big beautiful city . There’ was times I got discouraged, tired , felt defeated but my love and determination for the sport is pulled me up when I was down . I moved states right when my amateur career started with only 1 fight . Ending my amateur fight i managed to fight 13 more times living in Houston .

What sets me apart from others is that I have more hurdles to jump on my way to the finish line . With me being a busy mother of 3 young boys , a fiancé, business owner . My plate is full but I can’t complain but I’m always hungry. It takes ALOT from my family to be able to train the way I do , I sacrifice daily to be an athlete . I am relentless and I keep going . It makes my big victories and small ones so much greater for me . My family is my biggest fans and supporters . they are apart of my training to sometimes it’s always a fun time with them . It’s another way to spend some time and get active with my kids . Also show them no matter age , or how late you started . You can always chase your dreams AND turn them into reality .

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5 year our hopes are to have a couple of slushy trucks and being a Houston Must go to truck. Once I completely find balance and a great marketing team to help me accomplish that. Everyone that has supported us loves it. We serve carnival style treats all year around . That’s what draws people to us . I’n the works of entering more festivals locally too .
