Inspiring Conversations with Allison Cain of The Beauty Bug

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Cain

Hi Allison, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was never really good at much growing up. I wasn’t in sports, couldn’t sing or draw. As you get older you wonder what your niche or purpose is. I vividly remember watching my sister do her hair and makeup and then taking a bunch of photos on a digital camera. At the time I wondered who needed so many??? Thinking now maybe I had watched too closely… Before long I was curling my own hair and trying to put on makeup. I’d say people around me were beyond encouraging, before I graduated highschool I had already done makeup at a wedding! I also had a few classmates who asked me to do their makeup which was just an honor because I was not quite a professional yet. The biggest blessing was being able to get my cosmetology license while I was in highschool. I started getting hours as a sophomore and by the time I was a senior I had the 1500 hours, took the state exams, and was officially a licensed cosmetologist. The work didn’t end there though.. it had only just begun. Now that I’m a professional in the industry I have to find what exactly im passionate about which can be the hardest part sometimes. When I was in school I didn’t mind doing hair and learning but I didn’t really think it was what I was going to do for the rest of my life. Hair clogged in a sink drain has just never sat right with me. However I did spend too much time watching makeup tutorials so soon after I found myself working at Ulta Beauty in the brow bar. This was my plan while attending college. Well after getting 60 college credits you’re suppose to transfer to a university… I did that Uhd only to decide that college wasn’t for me. I didn’t know what I was going to do with a fancy business degree sitting in an office when all I could do was think about makeup. So after quitting college and working at ulta for over 4 years I had decided I need to do something different. I had become a little stagnant in my current work environment. I wanted to use new products for services and run on my own timeline. So I flashbacked to middle school business class when we were told to create a business plan and all I could think was I need a theme. Something cute & catchy so people would remember me. My whole life my family called me bug, buggy, alli-bug and one day it just clicked I didn’t need to think any on it any longer, I am The Beauty Bug. I found a mini storefront close to home north of Houston on Main Street in Old Humble. This area holds a lot of charm and history. The building I work in use to be a popular theater in the area until a fire in the 80’s retired it’s days of showing films. Since working on my own I’ve been able to expand my service menu, products, and skill set. I do all things brows, makeup, tinting, laminations, waxing, and lash lifts. Working for myself I am the happiest I’ve ever been and beyond grateful I get to uplift others daily. Sometimes you may wonder why the path is so rocky but if it led me here I’d take it over and over again and again.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No path taken is ever perfectly smooth. Trying to find your purpose and where you fit in can be a struggle enough putting aside family and financial issues. My parents divorce took a heavy toll on the family and caused everything we knew to change. I began working at 16 paying my own car insurance in my sisters name and phone bill. I was taking on adult responsibilities as a child but I whole heartedly believe it has made me who I am today. I thankful for every trial and tribulation because it has led me to happiness.

We’ve been impressed with The Beauty Bug, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Beauty Bug is a salon that offers boutique style temporary brow, makeup, and waxing services. We offer henna and stain sculpted brows paired with wax to give a defined shaped look. Along with laminations and lash lifts to really enhance the natural hairs. In the south full body waxing is extremely popular, this has become one of our most booked services. As makeup artist we offer travel packages to arrive on sight to your venue to prepare you for your special day. If you have a large bridal party our team will be happy to assist you.

What are your plans for the future?
One day I do hope to purchase our own property in Old Humble for The Beauty Bug. With hard work and determination I know this is possible.
