Conversations with Angela Romero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Romero

Angela, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It started when I was a kid, my cousin had put on cake boss and after watching just one episode, I was obsessed with decorated cakes. All of high school I would make a bunch of sweet treats and just hand them out to my friends, sometimes took orders from some of my favorite teachers. After graduating high school, I studied at the University of Houston in the Hilton College program with an emphasis in food and beverage. I had always imagined of owning a bakery, but it wasn’t until I took my beverage marketing class that my passion project, my dream job was to open a coffee shop. And not just any coffee shop, it will be a Mexican boba shop selling all kinds of sweet treats and drinks. I graduated from UH with my bachelors degree, as well as my minor degree in beverage management and marketing. It wasn’t until I was giving an opportunity to go to pastry school that I decided to go all in and just start my cake decorating business. It’s been two years now, I’ve graduated from Houston Community College with my Associates degree in Pastry Arts and have been growing little by little.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, I work full time as a Barista Manager and Head Pastry chef at an up an coming restaurant. So the burn out is very real, but my excitement to see people enjoy my cakes and the different sweet treats I make pushes me. I honestly didn’t think I would make to do weekly pop-ups because when I started I was the complete opposite of an out going business owner. I was very shy, mostly smiled when people would see my table at pop-ups. I didn’t think I had start the conversation and look at me now, full blown extroverted business owner that I can be proud of.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My main focus is decorated cakes but I also make all kinds of sweet treats from macarons, Mexican sweet bread called conchas, and other various pastries. But being a business owner, there are multiple hats you have to wear and my sweet treats are just one of the things I make. I’ve also produced various products from stickers and merch, soon to expand. Everything I make is unique because stuff what I love to do, I take my childhood experience and heritage and turn it into an amazing pastry or art work. That’s what sets me apart, expanding outside of the box and creating something unique to me.

What are your plans for the future?
Well right now I’m still working on the website, which will be coming out really soon, so keep an eye out for the launch! Right now I’m just saving up money to purchase a trailer or school bus to convert it into a food truck and just keep growing to open up my Mexican Boba Shop.
