Inspiring Conversations with Alecia Jones of Jones Legal, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alecia Jones

Hi Alecia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began at a young age when I saw Claire Huxtable on The Cosby Show looking classy and taking care of her family. She represented what I wanted to be; a wife, mother, attorney and formidable protector of her loved ones. I am a Southern girl from Alabama but I wanted a change, so I enrolled and completed my Juris Doctorate with Thomas M. Cooley Law School (now known as Western Michigan Law School). Before I even graduated, I set roots in Texas, took the bar, and hung up my own “shingle.” I will say that Texas has been very kind to me and I really feel like I belong here and that these are my people; this is my home!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Any journey comes with winding roads, curves and detours. Of course, since I am not a native Texan, I had to do a lot of networking to get to know others. As a Black female attorney, breaking barriers in a male-dominated industry has not been easy. There have been days that I felt unseen, unheard, misunderstood and disrespected but those days pale in comparison to the beauty I have experienced along my path. I have found that there are so many more kind, genuine and helpful people, than there are rude and conniving ones; the key is to have a spirit of discernment to determine which is which. The other side of that beauty is that now I get to help others from a different position of power, and I am and will continue to do just that.

As you know, we’re big fans of Jones Legal, PLLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Jones Legal is more than just a law office; we are a dedicated team of legal professionals with a clear mission: to support individuals through life’s transitions, whether it’s the end of a marriage or the loss of a loved one. We specialize in the full spectrum of Family Law and Probate matters, delivering results that matter. Our commitment to excellence drives us to continually improve, through extensive internal training and staying up-to-date on legal developments. Nothing is more rewarding to us than seeing a client’s relief when they can remain in their child’s life, or when we help honor a loved one’s final wishes by ensuring their gifts reach family members or charities.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Mentors are like keys that unlock different doors in life. My advice for finding the right mentor is to look for someone who embodies the type of professional you aspire to be. This requires observing them in action and, for me, allowing the Lord to guide the process. Some of my most impactful connections have felt like “divine appointments,” leading to relationships far more meaningful than I could have orchestrated on my own. However, finding the right mentor is only part of the equation—being the right mentee is just as important. Respect their time, be open to learning, and remember: if you knew everything, you wouldn’t need a mentor. You might be surprised at the connections you make when you get involved in civic clubs and volunteer to serve your community.
