Conversations with Reggie Mathias

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reggie Mathias.

Reggie Mathias

Hi Reggie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m originally from New York, but moved to Georgia at 13. During covid, I decided I’d move back up to New York and stayed for three years before deciding to come to Houston, after a friend told me about his experience here. As far as my photography, I started 12 years ago after being introduced by an uncle and I’ve loved it ever since.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s had its ups and downs for sure; imposter syndrome, times when I would feel stunted in my growth as a photographer, and keeping up with equipment. But my passion for photography, along with the community of photographers I’ve known inspire me to keep going

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a photographer, I specialize in portraits, more of an editorial style of shooting. People who have worked with me in the past know me for my expertise in natural lighting, but I love the finished look of studio lighting. I’m most proud of a shoot for an online magazine I did, the environment was perfect and the clients were all happy with the work I did, which in turn puts a battery in my back to keep going. What sets me apart is the impact of the photos I take for people. Photographers are prevalent in most places these days, but photos you can look back on for years to come, those are the photos i take that separate me from others.

How do you think about luck?
Luck has played a minimal role so far. I do like to think that blessings have come in my life that have humbled me, reminding me I’m on the right path. However some shortcomings in life given me a chance to reflect and learn. As time goes and my business grows, I feel like more luck, good or bad, is bound to come
