Check Out Krista’lynn Powell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista’lynn Powell

Hi Krista’Lynn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It may sound surprising, but becoming a dancer wasn’t my goal until just a few years ago! I started at the age of 6 as a tumbler at my home studio back then, Star Rhythm and Tumbling. From there, I went on to be a Jr. Texans Cheerleader and soon after joined competitive cheer. My new studio at the time offered dance as well, and although I was only interested in cheering, it wasn’t long before I was asked to take dance classes there too. Long story short, I was open to it and began taking recreational ballet and other dance genres while still cheering.

By then, I had been a cheer captain for one year and was named captain for the next season, but the more I danced, the more I loved it. This unexpected passion for dance continued to grow, leading me to pursue it more seriously. My path to dance began to solidify when I was accepted into Meyerland Performing & Visual Arts Middle School as a magnet student in the dance program. This is where my passion for the arts was nurtured and encouraged. My time there laid the foundation for my future endeavors, helping me develop the discipline and skills needed to excel in the demanding world of dance.

My journey as a dancer is a testament to my unwavering dedication and profound passion for my art. From my early days in middle school, dance became more than just a hobby—it became my soul’s expression. The stages I’ve graced, both at state and national levels, bear witness to my relentless pursuit of excellence. Through the highs and lows of competitive dancing, my spirit shines bright.

As a proud current member of the Summer Creek Starlettes drill team, not only are my abilities challenged, but it’s also a showcase of my growth and everything I have worked hard for, underscoring my commitment behind the scenes. It reflects my heart’s longing for perfection. But my journey isn’t just about winning accolades—it’s about the endless hours spent in dance studios, pushing my body to its limits in pursuit of refinement. It’s about the summer intensives and master classes where I dive deeper into my craft, seeking wisdom from those who came before me.

Beyond the dance floor, my heart extends to my community. Volunteering and participating in leadership programs are not just checkboxes on my to-do list—they’re expressions of my altruistic nature and my desire to make a positive impact. My leadership qualities shine through, illuminating my path as I dance towards a future filled with promise and possibility.

In me, you see more than just a dancer. You see a soul aflame with passion, a spirit unyielding in its pursuit of greatness. My journey is not just a story of steps and routines; it’s a narrative of resilience, love, and the transformative power of dance. And as I continue to grace the world with my artistry, one thing is certain—my dance will always be imbued with confidence, for it flows from the depths of my being.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. My journey has had its fair share of struggles and challenges. One of the biggest obstacles I faced was balancing schoolwork with the rigorous demands of dance practice. There were times when I had to miss out on social events or sacrifice sleep to stay on top of both.

Injuries have also been a significant hurdle. Pushing my body to its limits sometimes led to strains and sprains, and dealing with these setbacks required not just physical healing but also mental resilience. It was tough to sit out of practice and performances, watching my peers continue to improve while I had to focus on recovery.

Another challenge was overcoming self-doubt. In a field as competitive as dance, it’s easy to compare yourself to others and feel like you’re not good enough. There were moments when I questioned my abilities and wondered if I would ever reach the level of excellence I aspired to.

Despite these struggles, each challenge taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, self-care, and the importance of a strong support system. My family, teachers, and fellow dancers have been incredible sources of encouragement and strength. Every setback has made me stronger and more determined to succeed.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My life is my stage, and I carry myself in a way that I am proud of. I am a 15-year-old dancer with dreams of becoming a professional dancer and choreographer one day. Even though I started my dance journey later than most, I’ve embraced every opportunity with an open heart and a relentless spirit. Competing and performing on some of the highest platforms alongside incredibly talented dancers has been both humbling and inspiring.

I specialize in being a well versatile dancer and power tumbler. My ability to adapt to different styles and bring my unique flair to each performance is something I’m known for. I find joy in performing, leading, and creating through my dancing. Dance, for me, is not just about movements but about storytelling, expressing emotions, and connecting with the audience on a deeper level.

One of the things I am most proud of is my resilience. Starting later than my peers could have been a setback, but instead, it fueled my determination to work harder and prove that it’s never too late to pursue your passion. I’ve faced challenges and setbacks, but each one has made me stronger and more committed to my goals.

What sets me apart from others is my perspective on dance and life. I believe that it’s not about how you start but how you finish. This mindset has helped me push through difficult times and stay focused on my dreams. I want to be a positive role model through fine arts, especially for the youth. I want to show them that with hard work, dedication, and a love for what you do, you can achieve great things, no matter when you start.

In the future, I aspire to not only perform on grand stages but also to create and choreograph pieces that inspire and touch people’s hearts. I want to use my journey to motivate others, to show them that dreams are worth chasing and that the journey, no matter how challenging, is what shapes you into who you are meant to be.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I first want to thank God for giving me the gift of creative movement and for my abilities. This divine blessing has allowed me to work with some of the best trainers, choreographers and organizations. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to receive the Lauren Anderson Ballet Scholarship for the past two years, an opportunity that has significantly impacted my growth as a dancer. Big thank you to Mrs Charity Carter and the Edison Arts Foundation. Working with Mrs. Lauren Anderson and her team has been a dream come true.

Several individuals and institutions have played pivotal roles in my dance journey. For the past few years Mr. Dwayne Cook and Ms. Lauren Burke have been incredible trainers and mentors, helping me hone my skills and encouraging me to push my boundaries. The Urban Nutcracker and The Debbie Allen Dance Academy have also been instrumental in shaping the dancer I am today. Their rigorous training and emphasis on expression and storytelling have profoundly influenced my style.

My journey would be incomplete without shining light on The Summer Creek Starlettes, where I am currently a two-year member. Being part of this team has not only improved my technical skills but also taught me the importance of teamwork, discipline, and dedication. The camaraderie and support from my coaches, Mrs. Aranda, Mrs. King and my teammates have been a constant source of motivation.

Mr Peters over at Meyerland Performing & Visual Arts Middle School also played a significant role in my early dance education, providing a solid foundation and nurturing my passion for the arts.

Additionally, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a strong support system that has played a crucial role in my journey as a dancer. First and foremost, my parents deserve immense credit. They have always believed in me and supported my passion for dance, even when I decided to pursue it later than most. Their unwavering encouragement and sacrifices have been the foundation of my success.

To my social media team over at C.Marie Inc. Thank you for always helping bring my creative ideas and photo shoots to life!

My family and friends have been my cheerleaders, constantly encouraging me and keeping me motivated during tough times. Their positivity and belief in me have given me the courage to take risks and strive for excellence.

Each of these individuals and institutions have played a crucial role in my growth as a dancer. They have not only contributed to my success but have also shaped the person I am today. I am deeply grateful for their support and guidance, and I hope to keep making them proud as I continue to pursue my dreams.
