Meet Sahira Balouch of Prime Bazaar: Halal Supermarket

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sahira Balouch

Hi Sahira, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Prime Bazaar began when we spotted a vacant space in our neighborhood. After observing it for several months, my husband, ever the visionary, took the initiative to explore the opportunity. He took the plunge and pulled me in with him. Our community needed a neighborhood halal grocery store, and here was an available space—why not seize it? We both grew up with entrepreneurial spirits and had always dreamed of starting something together. Initially, we naively thought this would be a modest side hustle, but we couldn’t have been more wrong. We really underestimated the scope and potential of our idea.

In a twist of fate, we signed the lease in January 2020, and then the world shut down due to COVID-19 in March. Despite the uncertainty, we opened our doors in May 2020, praying for survival. For the next two years, the store became our life—the most intense and transformative years we’d ever experienced. The store quickly grew beyond just a business; it became our entire world. We invested every ounce of our energy, creativity, and resources into nurturing our small business. The phrase “blood, sweat, and tears” took on a whole new meaning as we worked tirelessly to ensure our store didn’t just survive, but thrived in the face of adversity (and there was plenty and external negativity always fueled us to push further).

Looking back on the past 4.5 years, we am in awe at the rollercoaster ride we’ve been on (sometimes nauseous and sometimes fun). Our journey has been filled with unexpected twists, daunting challenges, and moments of sheer chaos. Yet, when we step back and survey what we’ve created—the unique atmosphere of our store, our loyal customer base, and our positive impact on the community— we are filled with pride and accomplishment. With so many ideas bouncing in our heads, we’re just excited about the possibilities ahead, InshaAllah (God willing!). Despite all the hardships and sleepless nights, we can say with certainty that every bit of effort has been worth it. Prime Bazaar has become more than just a store; it’s a testament to our resilience, creativity, and unwavering commitment to supporting our community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our journey with Prime Bazaar has been far from an easy ride. We’ve hit some serious bumps along the way. The COVID-19 pandemic was like a massive traffic gridlock for us—nowhere to go and resources rapidly depleting. Our inventory reserves dwindled as most of our goods come from outside the US. Empty shelves for a new business? Gut-wrenching. We were scrambling to keep things stocked. Money was tight, resources were scarce, and support was touch-and-go. On top of all that, we also had to deal with intentional roadblocks put forth by others. But you know what? We figured if people were trying to slow us down, we must be heading in the right direction. Despite these setbacks, we didn’t let any of these obstacles run us off the road. Every time we hit a setback, we’d get together, usually over some good food, and just hash it out. We’d come up with new ideas, figure out ways around the problems, and then keep pushing forward. That’s been our driving force, really—never giving up, always finding a way to keep going, no matter what.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Prime Bazaar is more than just a grocery store; we’re a cultural hub and community cornerstone. As a specialized halal supermarket, we cater to the diverse needs of our Muslim community and beyond, offering a wide range of high-quality halal products, international foods, and everyday essentials.

We take immense pride in our role as a community pillar. Prime Bazaar isn’t just about selling groceries; it’s about creating a welcoming space where cultures converge and connections flourish. Our knowledgeable staff is always ready to assist, whether you’re searching for a specific ingredient or need advice on preparing a traditional dish.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe the most important characteristic to our success has been resilience—the unwavering ability to persevere through unprecedented challenges and adversity. This resilience not only allowed us to survive but to thrive in the face of uncertainty, turning obstacles into opportunities for growth and innovation. Our ability to adapt quickly to rapidly changing circumstances, maintain a positive outlook, and continue pushing forward despite numerous setbacks has been instrumental in establishing Prime Bazaar as a cornerstone of our community. Moreover, we believe that the success of the store isn’t just for us as business owners, but for our parents, our family, our customers, and our community as a whole.
