Check Out Krista Wheeler’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Wheeler

Hi Krista, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It all started when the pandemic hit, I was taking a break from college unsure of the path I was going to take. I began researching what was going to be calling, I knew I always wanted to go into the medical stand point, but was struggling with becoming a RN or something else. Around the same time I was going through a really rough time in my life and my skin was going through it to. Since I was a teenager I loved skincare, I loved how you can put so much time and effort into your skin and it would eventually pay off! So I started to dig into what I could do with skincare in the medical field, medical assistant popped up, Aesthetic RN, Medical Aesthetician. I didn’t know what an esthetician was let alone say that word correctly. So I did some more digging and realized I could go into the medical field stand point but also still help individuals feel confident in their own skin, because that was something I was struggling with too. I thought, “wow, I can help fix my own skin and help others too, in the correct way”, and not just believe everything you see on social media. Then bang, quarantine happened right when I was suppose to start my education, it was tough at first because each month my education kept getting pushed back. Until June of 2020 came and I began my training to be an esthetician. The material and training for becoming an esthetician was very easy and I felt right into place with my class. But something they don’t tell you in esthetics school is once you get your esthetics license, finding a career in it was brutal. The field in esthetics is competitive and anyone can be replaced. Once I graduated it took me a couple of months to find a job who would hire me with no experience. I looked for months until I found a Medical Spa off Holcombe to take a chance on me. But going into a medical spa, most managers want you to have your laser hair removal technician license, plus all these extra certificates for microneedling, dermaplane, IPL, tattoo removal, Chemical exfoliations, little did i know my training and education only began once I received my esthetics license. I was very fortunate that my new boss took care of all my expenses for training and education, and within 2 weeks I was on my feet treating patients. And within the first year I started training/instructing other newly grad estheticians on how to start into the Medical Field as a tech or esthetician. I was at my first esthetics job for 3 years until I took a huge leap in applying at another Medical Spa, right off of Waugh Dr, hidden between a Hand and Foot practice and an Irish Pub. And this is when I realized my potential as a Medical Aesthetician.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My struggles along the way were some emotional battles of feeling like I wasn’t good enough compared to how many people were already in the field and even had their own suite already.
I struggled with once I graduated with 12k in debt, there was even MORE classes I needed to take to make my esthetician resume complete. My certifications is what mattered. But money doesn’t grow on trees, I was brought up to always work for what you want, and so that’s what i did. I kept putting in all the hours and certifications until my portfolio was complete. But even then, I had to come to the realization that medicine is always changing, there is always a new products or new procedure that someone has came up with and if you’re not equipped to change with the medicine then this field is not for you. The constant growing of this field and the level of education of the skin, anatomy, and chemicals we put on our body plays a major role. And being confident in yourself but also your skills is what truly matters, if you do not believe in that products or that procedure how are you going to convince your clients to get it?

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Licensed Medical Aesthetician
Certified in Dermaplane, Microneedling, Chemical Exfoliation, Photo-facials and Skin resurfacing
I am a certified Senior Laser technician
I am also a ZO- Expert
I am an employee at ZO- Skin Centre Houston, the only ZO Skin centre in houston as well.
I am someone who is constantly growing and is constantly learning when it comes to skin care. I spread my knowledge through my clients but also through my social media.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was always someone who fit in and found my group of people. I always had lots of friends and loved surrounding myself with friends. However growing up i was someone who always wore their heart on their sleeve, I was boy crazy as every teenager was up until high school. I started putting me first and trying to feel confident in my own body. I was a 4’10 girly and very small and petite and felt like a little girl compared to everyone else who was changing. But I got along with everyone, anyone who would come around I would talk to and be chatty with. My interest was always basketball, music and from 13 years old to 16 I was in acting school. I signed with a management team and did a couple of modeling classes as well. Growing up that’s all i wanted was to be an actor, but as I grew older and older my dream started to die. Going to auditions and call backs and even attending in a pageant.
