Daily Inspiration: Meet Jennifer Hanson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Hanson

Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been a creative. I was exposed to art and culture growing up in my family of art admirers and collectors which set a foundation for my passion and appreciation for a wide spectrum of artistic expression.

Before having children, I worked in creative industries unknowingly gathering inspiration along the way that now comes through in my art. Specifically, working for textile firms amongst very talented designers sparked my intrigue with how spaces could be transformed by the use of different color, pattern and texture. I wanted to be a creator myself and naturally art was what I was most drawn to. As an outlet, I painted and experimented to express my craft. I continued painting when my kids were young and recognized a need in the market for original art that was accessible- something between replication prints and gallery fine art. I filled my own walls, and then painted for friends and family who admired my work. Word of mouth spread quickly, and I was soon approached by strangers who had seen my paintings in homes or businesses around Houston. I now sell nationally via Instagram, my website, and Ugallery.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In some ways getting to where I am today has evolved organically. In others ways, no. My journey has been full of lessons along the way. I’ve had to work hard on time management, balancing my own creative process with deadlines to meet. I’ve had to learn how to access that creative space amid other parts of my life and as a busy mom. I embrace a mindset that I can continue to adjust and adapt as an artist and business owner. Ultimately, sticking to my intuition has kept me aligned on my path and loving what I do. What has been smooth, is my steady flow of painting, commissioning and selling. I naturally always have something in the works and on the horizon which is exciting!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an abstract painter, and my work explores color, texture, and patterns. I draw inspiration from many areas which results in a diverse array of styles. My art is versatile and adaptable, ranging from expressive colorful pieces that can energize a space, to more serene muted pieces that imbue a calm environment. Implementing different techniques and experimenting intuitively is fulfilling and helps me grow in my profession. In addition to selling my inventory of completed works, I also paint custom commissions and collaborate with clients and designers to create the perfect vision in specific colors and sizes. Being accessible and expansive in my work is what sets me apart. I am proud that my art speaks to so many.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love all that Houston has to offer being a big diverse city, and there is so much to take advantage of here. Despite the vast size, Houston uniquely has a strong sense of community. People always seem willing to help, support, connect and collaborate for the greater good. I attribute my success as an artist in part to Houston’s receptive community.

What I like least is probably the extremely hot summers, hurricanes, and flooding!
