Meet Sawyer Marcum of Magnolia, TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sawyer Marcum

Hi Sawyer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always had a love for music. I started playing music at a young age – took piano lessons for 7 years starting in kindergarten. I was raised on classic rock, 80’s country, and believe it or not, cumbia.

I started writing songs when I was 17 years old. The songs I write today are inspired by real-life experiences and individuals who have had an impact on me.

When I was 16, my father passed away. And earlier this year, a few months after I turned 25, my mother passed away. Today I’m writing songs and booking shows to make them proud.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Several life experiences have forced me stop what I’m doing for a while, and even have forced me to pick up and move.

Mainly when my dad passed away and then recently when my mom passed away. I put the guitar down for a bit and spent some time in solitude.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a singer/songwriter and I mainly write songs that fall into country/americana/folk genres.

I believe what sets me apart are my life experiences. You can bet your dollar that every song I write, comes straight from the heart, with 110% of my effort and emotions poured into it.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When looking for a mentor, find someone who you look up to. Someone who you’d like to be like one day. Someone who models integrity, drive, intentionality, and a willingness to pour into the next generation,

Networking in the industry has been tough for me. I’ve been trying my best to capitalize on social media, but I’m still learning the ropes of networking in the independent artist industry.
