Daily Inspiration: Meet Xiara Favorite

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xiara Favorite

Xiara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been strategic about my path—every decision I made since high school had a purpose. However, after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Xavier University of Louisiana, I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of what to do next. This uncertainty led to a wave of negative emotions, including what I later recognized as post-grad depression. I struggled with feelings of inadequacy and often compared myself to others, which made that transition even more challenging.

It was during this difficult time that I embarked on my wellness journey. I started to develop personal wellness habits, and one practice that made a significant difference was journaling. These practices helped me rediscover a sense of purpose and clarity about my next steps.

In February 2020, I took a leap of faith and began sharing my experiences with post-grad depression. To my surprise, I connected with many recent graduates who felt similarly. This inspired me to launch Xi’s Essentials, a lifestyle and wellness blog that covers various topics related to personal development and well-being. Through my platform, I share self-care practices, mental health resources, faith-based advice, and product recommendations.

Now, as a recent Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) graduate from Texas A&M University School of Public Health, I’m on a mission to navigate the challenges of post-grad life while prioritizing wellness and self-care. I am passionate about creating balance in this new chapter, and I hope my content inspires others on their own journeys toward a healthier, more intentional lifestyle.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to where I am today has certainly not been smooth. While I’ve experienced growth and connection through my blog, the journey has come with its share of challenges. During my doctoral studies, I actually took a hiatus from my blog because I struggled in balancing my classwork, research activities, internships, and personal life (I was in a long-distance relationship + planning a wedding omg!). It was overwhelming at times, and I found it difficult to maintain the same level of engagement with my audience while managing the demands of my program.

These challenges tested my resilience, but they also deepened my understanding of wellness and self-care. I realized that prioritizing my mental health was crucial, and I often leaned on the very practices I advocate for in my blog, like journaling and self-reflection. This experience has shaped my content and allowed me to connect with my audience on a more authentic level, as I share not only my triumphs but also the struggles that come with navigating life after graduation.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently a Postdoctoral Researcher focused on community-based health studies, specifically examining the impact of air pollution on respiratory health in environmental justice communities—areas that are disproportionately affected by environmental hazards and injustices. My work is rooted in a commitment to equity and advocacy for those whose voices are often marginalized in discussions about public health.

In addition to my research, I actively share my public health journey on TikTok, where I’ve built a community of over 12,000 followers. Through this platform, I aim to educate and engage with a wider audience about the importance of environmental health, wellness, and of course, post-grad life.

What sets me apart is my unique blend of academic expertise and personal experience. My blog, Xi’s Essentials, complements my research by focusing on personal development and wellness, allowing me to connect with my audience on both an intellectual and emotional level. I take pride in being a bridge between scientific research and everyday life, making complex health topics accessible and relatable.
