Conversations with Gisel Barbareno Desir

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gisel Barbareno Desir

Hi Gisel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Brooklyn New York and Raised in Honduras , which is a country located in Central America, bordered by Guatemala to the west, El Salvador to the southwest, and Nicaragua to the southeast. It has a Caribbean Sea coastline to the north and a Pacific Ocean coastline to the south.Overall, Honduras is a country with a rich history, diverse culture, and stunning natural beauty. However, it also faces challenges like poverty, inequality, and political instability. My parents are part of a beautiful culture community Called Garifuna , The Garifuna people take great pride in their unique cultural heritage and have worked to preserve their language, traditions, and history. They are so resilience, their cultural richness, and warmth have made them an integral part of the fabric of Central America and beyond.
Which is why I plan to purchase land and help the economy grow , of course I’m just one person but I would like to start somewhere.
Throughout my life, I’ve faced challenges that have shaped me into the person I am today. One of the most significant experiences was surviving sexual assault. This traumatic event has had a profound impact on my journey, but it has also taught me valuable lessons about resilience, self-care, and the importance of support systems. As I continue to heal and grow, I’ve learned to advocate for myself and others who have experienced similar trauma. I’m proud of the strength and courage I’ve developed, and I’m committed to using my voice to make a positive impact.”
While on my healing journey that has allowed me to forgive myself and others , I’ve joined The LDS Church which has had a big impact in my life and my kids . I have three amazingly my oldest his name is King , plays basketball and does math in air. My daughter her name is Leonor well let’s just she is a smaller version of me with extra sassiness ,which brings me to my last little human his name is Sebastian he is Autistic and he has thought me so much and his Love is a different kind of Love .Even though I am the mom it feels like they are my siblings because it’s a learning experience for them and myself, sometimes I have to remind them that I’m the older siblings but we make it work. How forget to mention that I have two dogs , don’t ask what type of breed because I don’t know , like everyone in the house we’re all muts. I’m a medical assistant with a 9-5 job and a hair business. Working on being more productive and mentally stable not just for myself but for my kids. Life has definitely thrown some Lemons my way but I don’t allow it to stop me in my everyday life experience ,I simply learned to make some amazing lemonade and Enjoy life to the fullest.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Everything I’ve faced has been an obstacle, from living paycheck to check to not having car to not even qualifying for something do basic as to food stamps or paying my rent on time . I’ve gotten to the point where I’ve accepted life for what it is and Live. If it’s meant to be it will be so it’s no such thing as controlling the outcome.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
