Life & Work with Nhu Phan of Sugar Land

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nhu Phan

Hi Nhu, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My family and I immigrated to the United States in 2013 to reunite with my grandparents. Since then, I have married my husband, who is a Doctor of Pharmacy, and we are blessed with two boys. My hobbies include gardening, cooking, and creating handmade crafts. Occasionally, I sell items online to earn extra income and gain business experience. That’s actually how I first started my business.

I think learning English has been a significant challenge for me, but I am determined to improve it. Currently, I am a student at Houston Community College. While nursing was initially my career goal, I decided to pursue a business major because of my passion for entrepreneurship. I am working towards an Associate of Arts in Business, with plans to transfer to a university afterwards. Through college, I hope to enhance my English skills and learn more about managing my business effectively.

In addition to my studies, I currently own a small business based in Sugar Land, Texas. We initially started as NB Wedding LLC, specializing in wedding decorations. After a few years, we rebranded to NB Corporation of Texas LLC to expand into full wedding and event services. My company focuses on preserving traditional weddings for Vietnamese Americans. We offer services such as renting and selling traditional wedding attire, as well as decorating for Vietnamese Tea Ceremonies and receptions. Additionally, we offer floral arrangements, gifts, balloons, Lunar New Year and other holiday decorations for Nail Salons, Restaurants and Casinos. We are also available to work in other cities, including Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi, as well as other states like Louisiana, Georgia, and more if needed.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I remember the biggest challenge for my business was COVID-19. After three years as a full-time stay-at-home mom and selling online, I started an LLC in January 2020. My business opened a few months before COVID-19 spread to the United States. All companies closed, especially restaurants and event decoration businesses. Like all small business owners, I closed my business and brought all the supplies back to our garage storage.

After the pandemic passed, some wedding stores cleared out a lot of inventory. I decided to buy and develop my business despite the obstacles. I believe this business will grow quickly, and opportunities will come very soon. I was looking for a warehouse to store a lot of decoration supplies. By 2021, my company had made a great leap forward with over 10 weddings and events every weekend. Fortunately, I turned challenges into opportunities.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Business or Creative? I would choose my job as creative rather than business. My dream is to pursue my passion, maintain tradition, and keep nonstop creativity every day. My job is to create new, creative designs for my brides and grooms. I strive to blend traditional and modern elements, bridging Vietnamese and American cultures. It’s heartwarming to witness the smiles, tears, joy, and emotions of our clients. As a gesture of gratitude, I frequently volunteer for the Vietnamese community and groups whenever we have the opportunity. We constantly create many wedding and event decorations. Each wedding is a story told in a different way as the same as a special day. How wonderful it is to combine Eastern traditions and Western present. We offer all of the services including wedding planning, coordinator, florist, studio, makeup artist, decoration, design, balloon, gifts, and wedding dresses.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I deeply appreciate my husband and family for always supporting me in pursuing my passion and dreams. I could never have imagined that someone immigrating to a new country without knowing English, lacking finances, and having no experience could start and run a business as I do now. I aspire for my story to inspire new immigrants to the United States and encourage young entrepreneurs to chase their dreams.
