Today we’d like to introduce you to Kizzy Cobain
Hi Kizzy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since before I could form a cohesive thought, I’ve been singing. My story started when I was a child. Since I could speak, I’ve always known what I’ve wanted to do, who I’ve been destined to be. I started off with little. Making cover songs here and there, posting on youtube and other social media. I grew up around music my whole life, from my father singing, to my great grandfather touring. My lineage holds rhythm and blues. I never once stopped working for and towards my dreams of having my music heard. I found a few of the right people, the right connects, the right support a little down the line. One thing led to another, and I found myself consistently making music. I finally found the courage to not only make the music, but to show the music to the world. I never lost hope or belief in my dreams or myself, nor did I ever lose hope or knowing in God. Fast forward a bit, here I am on a roll, about to drop another album in the upcoming weeks here.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to the industry, the road to music, to sound, has not been smooth at all. I’ve faced many obstacles along the way. As someone in the world, by themselves without always having the proper support that I have felt I’ve needed, I’ve many times had to make do with what has been available to me. I’ve faced financial obstacles, I’ve faced internal turmoil, I’ve raced time. As an artist, an independent artist at that, the finances for everything you would like to do aren’t always readily available. Not having a label, or financial backing or marketing has made the road a bit tougher, but never impossible. Paired along with internal problems I’ve faced, whether that be childhood wounds of unworthiness, or abandonment, it all plays a very big role in facing the world, especially with something so intimate as your personal craft. Many of times, I’ve also faced lack of creativity and motivation, which both as well can and do stem from traumatic experiences I’ve come through in the past. All in all, I’ve faced many difficulties. But I feel as if my story would have no depth if I hadn’t. So I can proudly say, I wouldn’t change a thing.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am Kizzy Cobain, and I am an artist. I am an artist in many ways, but I specialize in singing. Neo soul is definitely the lane I’d say i’m in, I excel most in at least. I make music for the good of the world, food for the soul and mind of anyone listening. I am known for my very unique sound, and the way I articulate my words and sentences. I am most proud of my ability to remain honest and myself in and throughout my music. I’m proud of the bravery I’ve exhibited through the obstacles I’ve encountered while making music, and putting it out. I feel like the resilience and confidence I hold within myself is what sets me apart from others. My words are real and truthful to me, and I know other people can and do relate to my personal truth. I also feel the uniqueness of my voice, choice of beats, and word play help me to stand out above the crowd.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like most about Houston, is the culture and diversity. Everyone here has a place, and/or a lane to fit into and to feel seen. Because Houston is so big geographically, there’s nowhere that you cannot go, nothing that you cannot do. The opportunities are endless.
What I like least about Houston is how crowded it is. Although having more people makes it easier to get and feel seen, it also makes for a more saturated market. A more saturated market means more creatives flowing in and out, so I feel as if you have to be very unique to make any kind of waves in the world today. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but can definitely make this lifestyle and path a bit more obstacle ridden.
