Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawon Matthews Jessica Ahwash
Hi Dawon Matthews, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
-Dawon is an entrepreneur from Philadelphia- he has a large real estate portfolio and several successful businesses in Pennsylvania.
-Jessica was previously a first grade teacher.
-Dawon moved from Philadelphia for a business opportunity to open a club
-His business partner for the club made a few bad deals and Dawon lost over $300,000
-Instead of giving up and moving back to Philadelphia, Dawon decided to persevere and try a new business concept- food.
– Dawon studied the market and found a deficit- there was no late night soul food in Houston and there was no quality late night food in East Downtown Houston
-Jessica saw that Dawon was having issues with paperwork and permitting and offered to help and work for free to help get his business up and running
-Dawon then gave Jessica partial ownership of the businesses for her help and sweat equity and they became business partners.
-Dawon put the food truck in the same lot as the club that he previously lost at which we view as turning his previous losses into wins.
-The business made 6 figures in our first two months in business and our social media following has grown from zero to over 19,000 in 4 months
-We purchased our second food truck 60 days after opening our first one outright cash with the profit that we made from the first truck.
-By the end of 2025 we hope to have a brick and mortar location open
-We are currently developing digital education for those who would like to go into the food truck business. We have developed systems that have led to our rapid rise to success and we hope to be able to help other new food entrepreneurs do the same.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We have learned this business entirely through trial and error. Neither of us have experience in the restaurant industry. However, we both have a growth mindset and always look for the lessons in any mistakes that we have made along the way.
