Meet Yolanda Stiger of Sew Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolanda Stiger.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Yolanda. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I taught middle school for 10 years, and I loved it, but I wanted the freedom of owning my own business. After teaching a few sewing classes afterschool, it was very clear to me that that’s what I wanted to do. I did some market research and saw an opportunity to combine my love of teaching with my love of sewing, and taking the leap has certainly paid off.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting the business going wasn’t easy. Finding a place for my studio was a struggle, and I had just about given up when a lucky encounter at a bakery led me to 7710 Cherry Park, where I have been for 5 years now.

Please tell us about Sew Houston.
I am a sewing school for people of all ages and experience levels. I teach everything from kid’s classes and adult basics to clothing construction with every kind of sewing in between. I am most proud when I read reviews and people say that I am a great teacher and they enjoyed my class. When I taught middle school, those kinds of comments put wind in my sails, and now, they reaffirm that I am on the right course with Sew. I am happy to be using my Master’s Degree in Education to good use and having such a great time doing it. My students are a constant source of pride for me as well. I just love when they share pictures of what they are making, or really take off with their sewing. Many of them have their own business, or start one after coming to Sew, and I love cheering them on in their sewing careers.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I loved playing dress up and pretending to be different characters as a kid, so I have started a costume box at home for when kids come over. I can’t wait to dive into it with the next young visitor. I’m happy to say that, there is a good amount of dress up that happens at Sew. My girls love to dive in the scrap bin and design all kinds of beautiful and crazy costumes.
