Today we’d like to introduce you to Ting Wang
Hi ting, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am originally from Taiwan and I made the long journey to Houston with my family 30 years ago. While I embraced the new experiences and opportunities in a different country, I always carried with me the smell and warmth from my grandmother’s kitchen.
Inspired by the cherished memories of my Grandmother’s cooking, I decided to turn my nostalgia into reality by opening my own restaurant. With the support and expertise of two close friends who have extensive experience in the restaurant industry, I took the leap of faith and embarked on my new journey.
My vision is simple. I am dedicated a space where everyone can savor the dishes that have shaped my life and celebrate the wonderful culinary delights of Taiwan.
Today, whenever I get a compliment or get a smile from a customer, I get a fuzzy feeling in my heart because I know my Grandmother would be proud of me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
From the beginning, I had to stare financial restraints straight in the eye and I needed to raise capital. With the capital I raised, I had to budget wisely and plan things strategically to turn my vision into reality. After finding the location for Pepper Salt, the work began. Immediately, I ran into unreliable contractors who made things more complicated and that delayed the opening of the restaurant.
Staffing is always a challenge and my restaurant is no different. Its a difficult task because my goal is to build and train a team that shared my passion for cooking and to provide quality service. Rising food costs also presents its own set of challenges. I have to navigate wisely and continually evolve my menu in order to maintain affordability without compromising quality.
The obstacles definitely keep me on my toes. As a restaurateur, you have to persevere, problem-solve, be decisive and willing to change. So far, I feel good where the restaurant is at and I have been able to create a space that brings people together and enjoy great food. All the positive feedback that I have gotten so far form the local community is fuel I need to continue working hard and grow my reach.
Any big plans?
I have been in the restaurant business for well over 10 years. I’ve gathered my experiences and everyone I’ve worked with to create Pepper Salt. There has been many ups and downs the first year, but through it all, there has been consistent growth. I truly believe that is because I am adamant about maintaining high standards in quality, taste, and customer service. I look forward to meeting more customers and creating new Taiwanese delectable dishes, and broaden our customer base.
