Meet Nick Lockett of Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Lockett

Hi Nick, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey at the University of Houston-Downtown began almost 2 decades ago but now that I have returned to complete my degree, there is nothing that will stop me from fulfilling the promise that I made to myself.

During my initial tenure at UHD, my attention was shrouded by personal distractions, which led to a 1.0 GPA and academic suspension. Embarrassed by past, I recognized the need for change. When I returned years later, I had a renewed focus and a commitment to elevating my GPA to a level of personal pride. Heading into my 4th full semester back at UHD, I currently hold a 3.4 GPA and am a 3x Deans List recipient.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I am the father of a beautiful young lady by the name of Maliyah Lockett who is the driving motivation for me to finish my degree. Moreover, I actively contribute to the campus community. I serve as the President of the Undergraduate Student Government Association and as the Membership Director for the Black Student Association, roles through which I strive to make a meaningful impact on student life and campus engagement.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe any journey you first begin will have some level of resistance or difficulty, for me in my role as SGA president, I find time management to be the most challenging but with the right planner and time to get adjusted, it becomes less demanding.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently work for UT Health Houston as a Psychiatric Technician working directly with the nurses and mentally ill patients where I specialize in verbal deescalation and patient care. Professionally, I am known for my work ethic. I believe in letting the work I do with my patients speak for my worth in the company.

I am most proud of the work I get to do each day. It is a humbling job that allows me to be grateful and cognizant of my own mental health.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I believe I have two things that matter equally the most. What matters most to my soul is having a relationship with Jesus Christ, to make sure the work I do on earth is pleasing in the eyes of the Lord. Secondly, as a father, being able to provide for my daughter and to break generational holds on my family, to prepare her for a successful life.
