Meet Radhika Patel of Richmond

Today we’d like to introduce you to Radhika Patel

Hi Radhika, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My passion for baking has been there ever since I was 11 years old. This truly came from the Food Technology classes we had in school in England. Not only did we learn how to bake and make different things, but we also learnt the science aspect behind baking too.

Over the years, especially since I moved to Houston, I would crave my favorite English childhood bakes such as a Victoria Sponge. Luckily, I knew how to make these delicious treats and from time to time treated myself to a little baking afternoon, indulging in all the nostalgic memories!

It’s only when family would start to mention often how unique my British bakes were, and how there isn’t anything like it in Houston. My mind started to wonder, and The British Bakehouse was born!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a business from scratch is never easy, especially when it is a one-woman-show. Not only am I the baker, I’m also the marketer, the social media manager, the copywriter, the financial department and more. Managing my time alongside being a Mother to a 3-year-old (my biggest supporter), is often challenging. However, the rewards outweigh the risks and challenges. Seeing the reaction of my client’s not only when they see their bake but when they indulge in them too is priceless. The long days and midnight evenings seem a distant memory…. until the next order comes in…!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My background in Business Management and Marketing has really allowed me to start my own business. My previous work in England and Houston from Working for OMD UK, one of the world’s largest and most celebrated media agencies globally to working in Healthcare and Real Estate in marketing, social media and copywriting has given me the needed skills to really build a successful business.

Not only in my professional life but I’m also known as Eat with Rads the Food Blogger. Here I have built an amazing and supportive community. This platform on Instagram has allowed me to grow and share The British Bakehouse and show Houstonians what British baking is all about!

This is the one thing that really sets me apart from others. I’m a born and raised Brit who bakes classic and authentic British cakes and biscuits (the English kind, sorry Americans), which is unlike anything you’ll find in any grocery stores. We pride ourselves on using the finest, high-quality ingredients with NO artificial dyes.

The British Bakehouse really made some noise in its first launch year last year and I’m so proud of some of our highlights:

• Launched in April 2024!
• Successful collabs with local small businesses in Houston and surrounding suburbs.
• We went nationwide!
• Showcased our brand at events and markets.
• Won Best Presentation for our Sticky Toffee Banana Bread at Houston Botanical Garden’s annual banana bread competition!
• First event booked for 2025.
• Introduced our first savory offering, Gluten-Free and Vegan baked goods!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Support, support, support! This would be my biggest piece of advice when networking or even if you’re wanting to find a mentor. This can be in any shape or form from commenting on people’s posts, sharing with others, to shopping local small businesses and so on. The key is to be genuinely yourself. Look for those who align with your views and morals and simply reaching out is a great way to connect and form real relationships.
