Daily Inspiration: Meet Samantha Aquiningoc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Aquiningoc

Hi Samantha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2020, I got my brows done by a local PMU artist where I lived and haven’t regretted it. This sparked my interest in PMU that I later ignited this past year after welcoming my daughter. I’ve been a stay-at-home-mom for 3 years, my first year being the most difficult. You get lost in motherhood, losing any sense of yourself, and your identity. When we moved to Houston last year, I decided it was time for me to become a person outside of motherhood again, and have something for myself and my husband agreed. I wanted to be someone who helped others while doing something I loved in any possible way. I’ve always been passionate about art and self care and PMU is a combination of both in my eyes. Thinking back to how I felt after getting my brows done, happy and confident, I realized this is something I wanted others to feel too. I did research and found a professional trainer and my husband paid for all my trainings as well as my supplies to start. When I finished training, I had to find a place to offer my services. I made so many phone calls, dropped by so many places and heard “No” everytime until I called Gnosis Tattoo Studio & Art Gallery. They were actually the first place I wanted to call but I was so sure they would never have a beginner or a PMU artist, so I didn’t call until I got so comfortable with rejection and I thought “Well, what’s another no to me at this point ?” So I called, they happily scheduled to interview me, and they added me to the team. I was so ecstatic that I found my place among other artists in a beautiful luxury studio where I could begin my PMU career. I’ve been a PMU artist for a year now and have been trained in powder brows, lip blush, and lash line enhancement.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Having just moved here and balancing my time between my work and my kids, it’s been hard for me to find clients. I’ve realized just how much small businesses rely on friends and family and people in their community they’ve known for a while to get their business’ name out there. I really am building from the bottom up here, having no longtime friends or family to turn to for support here. Word of mouth is king for businesses like this but word of mouth isn’t easy to get when you didn’t grow up here.
Balancing my time between my kids and work has been difficult. Having a schedule that revolves around everyone else’s makes it almost impossible for me to have a consistent schedule as well as prioritize my business. However, I’m able to maintain some consistency through the weekends which is when I usually take clients. Things will get easier once my kids are in school. I’m confident in time I’ll increase my visibility through as many avenues as possible. The few clients I’ve had so far, mean so much to me they have no idea. I’m excited to grow my business and meet new people and maybe even make friends here.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

I’m most proud of my progress thus far, with my technique as well as creating a numbing cream guide for artists that I will release soon.

When I’m asked what sets me apart from others, I always think about how honest and transparent I am with my clients and people I meet. There are so many artists out there, trained and untrained, who will tell you anything just to get you in their chair and make a quick buck. I really pride myself in being as transparent as possible with my clients telling them what is and isn’t possible, what’s best suited for their needs and facial features, as well as complications or any risks involved. My own experience getting PMU has helped me become a better artist and is what drives me to be so transparent. There were so many things that weren’t discussed during my appointment and as a client I didn’t know what kind of questions to ask either. Having hindsight, I guide my clients, asking questions for them, things they may not even think of, to help better understand their desired results and expectations. Essentially, I look out for them as their best friend would.

What makes you happy?
Personally, having time to myself to do the things I love. Arts and crafts. Painting, drawing, sculpting, crotchet, and many other things.

Professionally, seeing how happy my clients are after their procedures and when clients turn into friends. When I see the way their faces light up looking at the end results it makes me so happy knowing I’ve helped someone increasing their confidence and simplify their routine in a way they didn’t know they needed.
