Life & Work with Rosanne (Rose) Kelley of Hardin County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosanne (Rose) Kelley

Hi Rose, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Since I was little, I’ve always been a singer and began leading worship at church in my late teens. In addition, I took voice lessons for at least 12 years, which helped shape my skills and was instrumental in discovering my “Voice Print,” so to speak. In 2012, I graduated as a speech therapist in the Netherlands and started working at one of the country’s most prestigious private speech therapy practices. By 2014, after completing several specialized courses, I began working as a voice pathologist with vocational speakers and singers—which was exactly why I studied speech therapy in the first place.

A few years into this, I was given the opportunity to become the lead educator within our Private Practice, training colleague speech therapists on how to treat clients with voice pathologies. Alongside that, I had the chance to explore some other exciting opportunities. However, after attending a summer worship school in California in my late twenties, I felt a clear calling to leave everything behind and study at their Ministry School for the full three years. Which seemed like a pretty stupid thing to do, as I was in the middle of so many good things happening in my life. But, this wasn’t just any ministry school—it specialized in Music & Artistry, and it taught me so much about myself, coaching and how singing could be an extension of my relationship with God.

During these years, I began offering free voice lessons, as I was surrounded by artists who wanted to grow their voices. Although I never intended to become an entrepreneur, it was during this time that I realized how unique the combination of my skills was: a deep anatomical and musical understanding of the voice, knowledge of vocal health, paired with experience and insight into the spiritual aspect of singing. Especially for worship leaders and Christian artists, there aren’t many options available to receive technical training without neglecting the spiritual principles behind it. The purpose of their singing is different from that of performing. On top of that, worship leaders have a huge vocal demand, but there’s not much education out there to help with that. I saw a need. That’s when House of Voice® was born.

I started the business in the Netherlands in 2019 and in 2023, I re-established it in the USA.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, haha. I had a lot of favor in the beginning of my business, where I was offered several spaces rent-free or at very low rent, allowing me to build my clientele.

Then, about a year into my business, COVID-19 hit. In the beginning, a lot of singers were uncomfortable with taking lessons online. To be honest, I didn’t think it would be as effective either. Thankfully, after some adjustments in how I taught, I realized it could be just as effective. I soon started attracting more clients.

Then, when I finally found my groove, I moved to the States to marry my now-husband and live here. I couldn’t work until I had my work visa, and the waiting time was ridiculously long as an aftermath of COVID-19. What was supposed to take five weeks ended up taking 1.3 years before I finally received my VISA & Green Card and could re-establish my business. Because of the delay, I had to essentially start from scratch in building my clientele.

I think my biggest struggle was the culture shock I experienced. The differences in communication, the needs of people, and the “how”s were so different, and it took me a while to identify this. I was discouraged at times, but by letting go of past ways and strategies, I was able to find my way through it, find new methods, and regain momentum. Another challenge was building a completely new community of singers and musicians to work with. You don’t always realize what you have, until it’s gone. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to recognize favor and not only be thankful for it, but steward it well.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work as a vocal coach for independent artists and worship leaders, primarily those interested in contemporary music like pop, indie-pop, electronic, atmospheric, dance, blues and jazz.

What sets me apart is my unique experience & skillset in the area of Voice Science, Music, Spirit- Filled Artistry & Worship. I look at the voice from every angle—not just focusing on the vocal cords, but also considering their belief systems, emotions, daily habits, personality, diet and so on. It’s all about seeing the whole person and how they interact with their voice. I am not claiming to be able to help them in all areas. I always want to refer them to an expert when it’s something I have limited expertise in. That’s why I am always looking to connect with other disciplines, so we can work together.

What sets me apart from most Voice Teachers is that I am certified in the Netherlands to perform Larynx manipulation, which you may know as “Vocal Massages”, as well as Taping of the jaw-, neck, shoulder, back and face area. I don’t perform them currently in person, but I do teach singers how to apply an effective self- massage as well as taping of their most important muscles for singing. It has brought instant & sustainable relief in most of my clients that experience hypertonia.
On top of that I am a certified LAX VOX® Master Trainer. LAX VOX® is still on the rise in the USA, but it has been in high demand in Europe and gaining popularity for the past 15 years or so because of its ridiculous effectiveness. Many people think it’s the same as ‘Singing Straws,’ but while there is some overlap, it actually offers different benefits compared to the thin, short straws. I would love for more singers in the USA to experience it, as it accelerates vocal growth. As of now, I am the only official LAX VOX® Master Trainer in the USA.”

As a seasoned worship leader and singer, I’ve definitely walked the path of figuring out vocal technique. I also struggled with my vocal health, as I sang myself hoarse many times. And honestly, some things didn’t come naturally to me at all. I had to learn how to practice my voice in a way that worked for me—and that wasn’t always easy. Looking back, I am proud of how far I’ve come. I no longer experience hoarseness after singing, my voice is stronger and more nuanced. And this is just the beginning. I still have a lifetime to discover more of what my voice is capable off.
I know it doesn’t help when someone just shows you how it should sound. And that’s what I love about coaching singers: because of my own journey I know how to break down complex techniques and make them accessible. I’m all about finding those little “aha” moments where things click for a singer and helping them get real, tangible results.

One of the things I’m most passionate about is helping singers who struggle to make practice a consistent habit. A lot of talented singers get stuck in their growth because they can’t turn practice into a routine. I know the struggle, I was one of them 😉 So, I love creating tailored strategies that help them build strong, sustainable habits so they can grow.

I’m especially drawn to working with singers who have talent but feel like they’re “just average” or like they’ve hit a ceiling. Those are the ones I thrive with—the motivated singers who know that they know, that they’re meant to sing and are ready to put in the work to steward their voice.
I don’t do so well with singers that just want to sing to be famous. I am looking to work with the ones that carry a message, a substance.

My focus is on helping them break through those mental and vocal barriers to expand their range, smooth out vocal breaks, and be creative with their vocal artistry. I want to give them the tools to express themselves with full freedom and creativity.

In House of Voice® we offer 1:1 online lessons, workshops (both online and in person), singing challenges, and e-courses. Out of a need for my students, I also created the Voice Shop, where I sell products that help singers hydrate, train, and restore their voices—everything from vocal health to performance recovery.

One of my proudest accomplishments was launching the ‘Voice Art Line’ in collaboration with ‘Ilona Original’ last year: a set of signature Voice Anatomy Posters that have become quite popular with voice teachers and voice pathologists. It’s been amazing to see how they’ve resonated with the community and how they’re helping people understand the voice in a more visual, interactive way.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Our annual trip, during which my family and I would take a solid 4-week vacation to France. We would go to a very cheap camping, but it didn’t matter because we were basically living outdoors. Getting our “baguettes & flutes” from a drive-by bakery in the mornings, walk up to the lake every day, swimming from dawn until sunset, visiting markets, and finishing piles of books. We stayed long enough to reach that point where we were READY to go home. To me, that’s always a sign that you’ve gotten the most out of your vacation. 😉
