Conversations with Alexandra Makeeva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Makeeva

Hi Alexandra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Moscow, where my creative journey began as a model. Being in front of the camera taught me so much about posing, lighting, and the art of storytelling through photography. But over time, I discovered that my true passion was behind the lens—creating and capturing moments that make people feel truly special.

I started my career with women’s portraits because I love helping women see their beauty and feel confident. Over the years, I’ve expanded my expertise and now focus on maternity photography and women’s portraiture, which allows me to combine creativity with a personal connection to my clients.

Today, I run my own studio in Houston, where I’ve built a space dedicated to comfort, creativity, and an exceptional client experience. Every session is designed to make people feel celebrated and empowered, and I’m proud of how far this journey has taken me. It’s been an amazing adventure, and I’m excited to keep growing both as an artist and a business owner.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I believe challenges are what help us grow. When I transitioned from being a model to a photographer, I had to learn everything from mastering the technical side of photography to building a business from the ground up.

Moving to Houston brought its own struggles, like finding clients and building trust in a new market. Balancing the creative and business sides of running a studio has also been a learning curve.

But every challenge has made me stronger, and seeing my clients’ joy reminds me why I love what I do.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in women’s portraiture and maternity photography, focusing on creating elegant, timeless images that empower and celebrate women. What sets me apart is my background as a model, which gives me a unique understanding of posing, lighting, and how to help clients feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera.

I’m most proud of how I’ve been able to connect with my clients on a personal level and bring their vision to life. Whether it’s capturing the beauty of motherhood or creating a stunning portrait, my work is all about making women feel seen and celebrated.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 crisis was a turning point for me. It gave me the time and clarity to realize that photography wasn’t just a passion—it was something I wanted to pursue professionally. That period encouraged me to take the leap and start my business on a professional level.

It also taught me the importance of adaptability and resilience. Starting a business after such a global shift came with its challenges, but it showed me how essential it is to stay focused on your goals, even in uncertain times.

The experience made me even more committed to creating meaningful work and connecting with people through my photography. It was a reminder that capturing special moments is more important than ever.
