Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire McInnis.
Hi Claire, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, music was always there – my grandfather would play The Beatles on the way to school, and my dad would blast Van Halen before soccer games. Music played a huge role in my childhood, which really influenced my musical taste. I’ve always had a passion for discovering new tracks, remixes, and artists. So, becoming a DJ felt like the next logical step.
About a year ago, my friend Jill asked me to DJ an event, and things took off from there. It’s been incredible to turn my passion into something I can share with others. I feel really lucky to have a supportive family and friends who encourage and believe in me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been challenges, just like with any skill. One of my biggest roadblocks has been letting go of perfectionism. There’s nothing quite like an unexpected technical difficulty or a song that doesn’t quite land with an audience. Those moments used to really shake me, but I’ve learned they’re just part of the process and will only help me grow.
Imposter syndrome is another tough one. Walking into a room where no one knows you can feel intimidating, especially when you’re trying to prove yourself. Trusting myself and being prepared has been key to overcoming that. Pushing through moments of self-doubt has helped me come out more confident—not just as a DJ, but as a person.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an open-format DJ, which means I play multiple genres instead of being limited to just one. That being said, I’m always up for trying new things to keep my sets fresh and exciting.
Remixing and making mashups are especially fun for me. In the future, I’d love to start producing music and share the songs I have in my head.
It’s funny, sometimes I forget I didn’t always do this. It’s truly wonderful to be recognized for something I’m passionate about.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
1. Start simple. Don’t feel pressured to spend a lot of money right away. When I began, I bought a board my friend (shoutout Phillip) recommended. I’ve used it ever since. If you can’t buy gear yet, download free DJ software and see if it’s something you like.
2. Another big tip: scope out online DJ communities on Reddit to learn from others who have been in your shoes. I feel like the DJ world is very friendly; everyone I have met has had the understanding that there is room for everyone.
3. Say yes; my mentor Jesse once advised me to say yes to all gigs when you’re starting, to gain experience. He was absolutely right. It will help you grow immensely.
4. Organize your music from the start. Create folders and set cue points. It will save you so much time and stress later.
5. Above all, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Every gig, every connection, every risk is a step forward and will shape you as a person!
6. If you learn by doing, check out Dynamic Sound in Houston! I’ve met and learned from fantastic mentors there!
