Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Babbitt
Dawn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am the product of a private catholic education, from a child and to this day I have always marched to the beat of my own drum. I love to achieve and to lift other people in the quest for achieving their goals. I am particularly focused on mentoring young ladies in accountancy as it can be, at times primarily male dominated but it is changing and we have women leaders in finance achieving success rapidly. I have always had a strong sense of being responsible with a twinge of “Girls just want to have fun”. I have never done anything professionally except accounting. Growing up my father owned a warehouse and distribution business in Oklahoma City, a business that was originally started by my favorite uncle, “Unc” and Aunt back in the 1960’s in Houston Texas. A long line of entrepreneurs – we are actually on the 5th generation of owning our own businesses, I have gained a lot of wisdom from them and I also never quit, that is the key. Accounting just kind of followed me from my dads business to an elective in high school, where a perceptive educator showed me that I was given a “Gift.” He believed I would be good at accounting – I thought how boring, tax all the time. That common thought has ended up being so far from the truth. It is so much more and I promised myself and my first boss, who showed me how to be an effective investment for businesses, that I would use the certification to empower people and instill confidence in the decisions they are making. I have been told many times over, “I am not your typical CPA”, chatty, friendly and professionally. I simply do not believe that. We are in the people business and one of my favorite parts of Redfish Accounting is being a part of an advisory team of experts that is literally coming together and transforming every part of their life, unlocking puzzles and building solid foundations with facts and solutions. When I am not cruching numbers and running my mouth. I enjoy all sports as I was a fast pitch softball player. There’s a side of me that enjoys slowing down and practicing yoga. I most certainly gotta have tennis as well. No matter what hat I wear I truly believe we are all human and in our human journey we want an inner knowing that we are okay and we will be okay. That is the best part of my firm, career and life’s works. Is building trust, long lasting relationships, where we get to instill in our clients, with data that they will be okay.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Theres no way that it has been smooth or easy. It’s been challenging and rewarding. Ya, no way has it been smooth. Let me see, surprise here is a beautfiul baby boy, surprise divorce, suprise, this job was awful , life is life and it was not easy to pass the exam be a single mom, have people still like you at the end of the day. lol – True Story. Some people don’t like to see others succeed. That’s true, unfortunate and at times lonely.
Now I am running a business and helping others with their business, and that child – love of my life – he is a truth seeker and so very strong. That ex, he won’t go away or do anything really but there’s no guarantees in life and my son and I move forward, find the good and things work out – that is life, that is owning and growing a business.
As you know, we’re big fans of Redfish Accounting Services and Equitable Forensics . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a team of experts and Accounting being one part of that team. Not a one of us has less than 20 years in our fields and we are all certified Investing, financial planning, legal, Insurance- Life, commercial lines and auto property and casualty. We are an advisory practice – “The firm of the future” except we’re here now. We all come together as one cohesive unit and look at a business or family clients needs and make sure that they will be okay = okay financially and it works because the client has all their professionals together and working with each other for them.
Redfish Accounting has a business advisory team and we are expanding to add another accounting professional on a partner track to completely take over tax advisory. We do financial reporting, professional bookkeeping, quarterly analysis, business strategy and solutions and exit planning. We insist on helping business build to sell and walk with them through the ups and downs.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory, that’s difficult. I have several. One would be watching my Dad own and operate his own business. I had the itch and the drive. I wanted to know what the profit margin and all the other jargon meant. That way when I grew up I would have that knowledge. He made it look easy.
Then there was the other side who loved sports. Fast pitch softball. I was pitcher and had a career in pitching in Oklahoma. That I could be proud of, we had a lot of exciting times.
