Hi Bunz, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a native Houstonian, born and raised in the East End, where I continue to reside today. My passion for the tattoo industry began in my teenage years, as I became captivated by the imagery and aesthetics of tattoos on the skin, as well as the intriguing world of piercings and body modifications. This fascination led to an official start in the industry when my best friend, Peter Ortiz, also known as Peter Tats, secured an apprenticeship at Inkmadness Tattoos.
From that point, I began working at the front desk of the shop. I transitioned to another studio on Westheimer, where I continued my role at the front desk. As I gained experience and knowledge about the inner workings of a studio, I progressed to managing the studio while simultaneously completing my apprenticeship. Once I was established in my career, I moved between various locations, from Westheimer to Clear Lake, and eventually returned to the Westheimer area. I have now found my permanent home at Houston Heights Tattoo.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My career has certainly experienced numerous ups and downs. There have been many instances where it was a challenge to earn enough solely from body piercing. At times, I had to prioritize a traditional 9-to-5 job to supplement my income, which temporarily sidelined my body piercing career. Additionally, working in studios that suddenly closed required me to quickly search for new employment, which was always a difficult process. I am now grateful to be in a position at a studio where I can earn a sufficient income to support my self and family.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a body piercer at Houston Heights Tattoo, where I specialize in first time piercings for younger clients, ensuring a positive and memorable experience. Additionally, I offer a stunning selection of high-end solid gold and genuine stone body jewelry. My clients often appreciate my light touch and gentle approach, which, combined with my warm and welcoming demeanor, creates a comforting atmosphere during each piercing session.
I take great pride in being one of the few APP (Association of Professional Piercers) certified piercers in Houston, and I’m thrilled that our studio has received APP approval as well. What truly sets us apart is our commitment to staying at the forefront of the industry. We continually pursue the latest education and tools, and we offer a diverse array of the highest quality jewelry to ensure our customers receive nothing but the best.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories has to be when I was selected from the audience at the Ringling Brothers Circus. Along with a group of other kids, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the show! We were taken backstage to meet all the amazing animals and performers, and then we were brought out to join the clowns during their lively performance. It was an unforgettable experience.
