Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Fortune
Hi Danielle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story started on March 8, 1989. I came straight into the world out of no where loud, vibrant, in my own world doing my own thing. im the baby of 7 with a 10+ year gap between us. I spent most of my time either in my room singing at the top of my lungs or creating the craziest styles on my dolls hair. My father was a Baptist Preacher so I couldn’t do much! lol Always in church and during spring break and summer time I stay with my aunt in acres home who was a hair stylist, salon owner, and also sang and played the piano at my grandfathers church. She was so cool and stylist, I wanted to be just like her and that’s just what I did. Now. at the age of 36 Ive overcome what people would call hardships like teen motherhood & domestic violence, only fueled me to be the hustling entrepreneur I am today. A Licensed cosmetologist, natural hair salon owner, aswell as a singer & songwriter. I have worked with some amazing artist &celebrities not only in the salon but performing on stage. I am so grateful God has allowed me to use my gifts to provide and pave the way for my 3 children.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been far from a smooth ride! I would like to say the very opposite, ROUGH! I stated how I overcame the teen mom statistics of not completing high school. I was 16 when I became a mom. Graduated on time with my credentials to be a cosmetologist once state board was completed. In my mid 20’s While enjoying my career as a salon manager and upcoming Houston live music singer, I found myself in an abusive relationship. After 4 years and 2 beautiful children I finally got the strength to make a plan to leave. I left and never looked back, those moments alone as a single mother pushed me to go all. in and the following year I opened my salon March 2019.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a natural hair stylist/loctician specialist and an R&B/Indie artist. A lot of my clients have come from me performing at local venues in Houston, word of mouth, or instagram. Im authentic from head to toe representing my unwavering love for black culture. Afrocentric roots & Soul. You can find my booking link for the salon on my instagram page. Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Credits go to my Mother Dr. Betty Fortune who. showed me what a strong black women looks like. My aunt Anita Shepherd who showed me the hair game and effortlessly displayed being a single independent black mother could look cool. Celeste owner of Eclectic Vibes who taught everything I know about natural hair, showing me how to be a boss still holding the spot as one of social medias dopest TOP Natural Hair Gurus around. My 3 children Jayla (19), Parker (9), and Prince (8) who push me everyday to never give up because they deserve the world and the best version of me today.
