Today we’d like to introduce you to Ra’shunda Adams
Hi Ra’Shunda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I love talking about relationships and have always loved asking questions to figure out a person’s motivations behind their decisions and behaviors, so naturally becoming a Couples and Relationship Therapist made sense. This passion was only reinforced after getting engaged and going through my own premarital counseling, and getting married in 2008. I quickly became a believer that healthy relationships lead to healthy and secure marriages, which is the basis for healthy families, and a solid societal foundation. My husband and I did marriage and premarital counseling as marriage ministry leaders and branched out on our own in 2020. I wanted to extend my help with the many complexities and challenges of relationships, beyond premarital counseling, and graduated with a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy, and started my own private practice, Aim for Healing Therapy, PLLC in June 2024. At Aim for Healing Therapy, I help people break unhealthy patterns, set healthy boundaries, and create the relationships that they deserve and desire, with themselves and others.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road because I experienced significant loss along the way. From November 2014 to December 2016, my mother-in-love, my Dad, a close aunt, and my husband’s grandmother all passed away. The loss of important relationships, and pieces of my village, was devastating. I also had two children within 15 months of each other, May 2015 and August 2016, which caused significant shifts and difficulties in my career, finances, and in my self-esteem. My life took another major shift when during the COVID-19 pandemic, my 19 years in the oil and gas industry was paused since I was a part of a major corporate layoff. I used that layoff as the confirmation to pivot my career into the mental health field and enrolled into a graduate program. Even after graduating, I have experienced several challenges toward my path to full licensure because of restrictive practices and policies by the state and the health care system, leading me to advocate for an interstate licensure system; which will allow a more streamline process for therapists to be licensed in multiple states and increase accessibility of therapy for everyone.
We’ve been impressed with Aim For Healing Therapy, PLLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Aim for Healing Therapy, is my private practice where I, virtually, help couples break unhealthy patterns, strengthen communication, and reconnect emotionally, to create happy and healthy relationships that they deserve and desire. Most relational issues stem from the lack of effective communication and I work with couples, families, and parents to develop the language necessary to develop deeper understanding and deeper connections.
What sets me apart, as a therapist, is that I offer premarital counseling, and relationship coaching, with my husband for anyone in the United States. Our premarital program offers both the male and female perspectives, lowers the risk of divorce by 30% (with the Prepare/Enrich assessment), and gives couples practical relationship skills for a lifetime long marriage. I am also a co-host of the The B-Side of Marriage Podcast, where we have real, unfiltered conversations about relationships and marriage. It is the go-to space for honest conversations, expert insights, and advice on love, commitment, and everything in-between.
I am most proud of being able to create an authentic, down-to-earth environment and approach to therapy that is inclusive, affirming, and supportive for all relationships and backgrounds. At Aim for Healing Therapy, it’s more than individual healing – it’s about strengthening relationships, communications, and connection. Whether it’s couples therapy, premarital counseling, or helping individuals navigate self-worth and relational challenges, the focus is on always on deep, meaningful transformation to navigate real-life challenges!
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My husband, Jason Adams, has been my biggest supporter and cheerleader! He’s always available to bounce ideas off of, consult with, use his expertise to further my dreams and visions, and be there to hold me when I need a safe space to just “be”. My church, The Ark Fellowship and Pastor Angela Okotie-Eboh, have also kept me encouraged, prayerful, and very supportive in my purpose and business aspirations. I also have my clinical supervisor, Dr. Mercedes Moore, my village, and friend circle, who have mentored me, and advocated for me, as I continue to grow and expand.
