Today we’d like to introduce you to Tha Salmex
Hi Tha , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I stared recording in a garage in the south east tx neighborhood of oak meadows when I was 16. I was in and out of neighborhood troubles, so I would do music on and off. At 19 yrs old I was driving with my kids in the back seat I pulled into a parking lot about to run out of gas and my kids were hungry. I was gonna rob 2 guys under a light post. I remember I had a back pack full of cds of one of my new albums. It was a cold rainy day and the parking lot was empty. I thought this is dumb, I’m standing in the cold. A car pulls into the parking lot right to me. I ask do you wanna buy a cd? The guy reply’s yea I got your last cd it’s jammin. He ask this your new cd. I say yes he says I’m with a car club tell them I said to buy one. I left that day making over 200 dollars. So I took it as a sign from God to proceed this music career. I’ve done shows all over Texas with my versatile music from rap, trap, Spanish rap, to cumbia rap. Which makes me standout. I’m not your one style artist, I’m universal.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This music game is not for the weak. When I started I would sell out my trunk Friday Saturday & Sunday. The way I would get a customer’s attention is by saying, take a listen if you don’t like it I’ll break it. Unfortunately I had to keep my word & break a couple but thank God not many. Other problems in this game are people who would paint a picture of false promises there’s many snakes in the game willing to take advantage of many hungry artists. But the most heartbreaking thing was leaving my kids to chase this dream. Very heartbreaking but my kids understand I fed and clothed them on my music since they were babies, now they are 20 Cesar jr and 21 Angelina.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Latin artist out of Houston Tx. I’m mainly known for my Spanish cumbia rap. I’m very proud I never gave up putting out music since I was 16. I want to believe that music freezes time. So when my kids can go back and hear me doing what I love. The thing that sets me apart is my love for my roots. When I started many artists didn’t rap Spanish. I don’t know why maybe fear, either way I had no fear to show my Salvadorien & Mexican roots.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I want to believe that God gave me the option to either rob 2 guys under a light post or use my music to make a living. I’m glad I made the right choice. This music has taken me Soo many places. And I’ve met many people who tell me they love my music
