Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasin Khan
Yasin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Our story perhaps began over a decade ago when my Partner and I decided to go to law school—at Harvard and UVA, respectively—where we both graduated to become first generation attorneys in our families. Though we took separate paths, we ultimately met in the lobby of a downtown Houston high-rise (609 Main Street), where we had been recruited to begin our careers as private equity attorneys at a prestigious white-shoe law firm, each of us with dreams of leading multi-billion dollar deals for the largest financial sponsors in the world. Spencer left the firm fairly quickly in pursuit of becoming a litigator, disillusioned by the lifestyle we informally dubbed as “BigLaw” in the industry. I stayed on for five more years, honing my craft and building a portfolio of deals exceeding $50 billion.
But through the years, we never stopped talking, planning, and at times dreaming of a different path—one where we could use our skills to serve people, not just investors. Welch & Khan is the realization of that vision: a law firm dedicated to personal injury, civil litigation, and wrongful death cases. We bring the same level of sophistication and tenacity once reserved for institutions like Blackstone and BlackRock to everyday individuals and families—fighting for justice with the same intensity for our clients in Houston, Texas and beyond.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We always believed in the vision behind Welch & Khan, but even we’ve been surprised by how quickly it has taken off. In just a short amount of time, we’ve built a practice that has not only drawn the trust of clients but also earned the confidence of over a dozen attorneys and medical professionals who now send cases to us. And, ultimately, there is no vote of confidence worth more than referrals from former clients and professionals within the industry. Today, we are actively working on multimillion-dollar matters that span industries and legal disciplines—cases involving public company violations of the False Claims Act, wrongful deaths from mesothelioma, the unauthorized use of a former MLB player’s image and likeness, and serious injuries from commercial and rideshare accidents. What started as an idea between us to provide sophisticated legal representation to anyone with a legitimate case on a contingency basis—which is a fancy way of saying we only charge a fee if and only if we win for our clients—has become a thriving firm.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Welch & Khan is a law firm built on the idea that the same level of legal sophistication and firepower once reserved for Wall Street investors can—and should—be used to fight for individuals and families seeking justice. We specialize in high-stakes personal injury, civil litigation, and wrongful death cases, representing clients in matters ranging from catastrophic injuries and corporate negligence to complex disputes involving public companies and professional athletes.
What sets us apart is our background—we come from the world of billion-dollar deals and elite legal strategy, but we’ve redirected that expertise to advocate for people rather than institutions. We’re not just another personal injury firm; we are litigators who thrive in the complexities of high-value cases and aren’t afraid to take on major corporations, insurers, or powerful entities.
Brand-wise, we are most proud of the trust we’ve earned—not just from our clients, but from the legal and medical communities. Over the years, we’ve built a reputation known for its unmatched level of precision, strategy, and relentlessness to every matter we handle.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about Houston is its energy—this city is a collision of cultures, ambition, and opportunity like nowhere else. The diversity here isn’t just something we talk about; it’s something you experience every day, in every neighborhood, in every conversation. It’s in the way people from every background come together, in the small businesses that thrive, and, of course, in the food—because no city in America competes with Houston when it comes to cuisine. Whether it’s Viet-Cajun seafood, old-school Tex-Mex, or a steakhouse that rivals anything in New York, Houston doesn’t just have great food—it has food that tells a story of its people.
What I like least? The traffic. There’s no getting around it—Houston’s sprawl is legendary, and if you’ve ever sat on 610 at rush hour, you know patience is a necessary survival skill. But even then, there’s something about this city that makes it worth it. You might be crawling down the freeway, but you’re still in Houston—where anything is possible and where, with the right mindset, every challenge is just an opportunity.
