Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay King
Hi Jay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Jay King, im an aspiring recording artist, actor, dancer, producer, musician, and record label CEO, out of PG County, Maryland, by way of Houston, Texas. By the age of 9 i knew that my gift and passions were in the creative space and the entertainment industry. By the time i finshed elementary school i had wrote 3 full 90 minute movie screenplays as well as a television series by mysefl, two albums worth of music, a couple of childrens books, and taught myself how to sing all within the span of two years and before the age of 10. To me it was just things i was doing while i was grounded for actin up in school, but to everyone else it was creative genius. The things that were normal for me wasnt normal for other kids and i had failed to realize that. i shelfed all of that ability for years to pursue an athletic career in the sport of basketball. But when the pandemic hit in 2020, my fire for creativity came back and i felt led by God to start actually recording music instead of just writing it and never using it, i got back into writing screenplays again, and i also developed a love and desire to own a record label and find the next generation of talent. I founded my own record label called 2400 Entertainment in 2022. I plan on developing that along with my own artistical career to become a powerhouse in the industry and give fair treatmeanr and power to the artist.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s a lot of challenegs with my field of choice. To make it in the entertainment industry you cant make mistakes, you dont have the leeway for that. Every song you make has to be good, it has to be captivating and it has to bring positivie attention. Social media have all of a sudden become music experts and have a huge say in dictating what an artist should and shouldnt do. And also the chance of being discovered by major players in this field without already knowing an insider is very VERY slim. There’s a certain level of delusion and optimism you have to in order to be in this field a lot of artists dont have the mental capacity to deal with, its why a lot of artists give up. Henceforth me being an artist that retired my craft at least 4 times before honing it in and deciding to make it a full time dream come true. If it was easy everyone would make it, everyone would be rich, and everyone would be happy. But thats just not the case, you have to work harder than the next man and earn it every single day.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So as i said previously im a recording artist, musician, dancer, actor, producer, and screenplay writer. Id say the thing that seperates me from everyone else is my creativity. For example, im trying to do something ive never seen anybody in the industry do by creating a triple threat artist. Meaning I want Jay King to a total of 3 artists in one, one for each genre including Hip Hop, R&B, and Pop; and treat them like alter egos yet theyre all me. Different outfits, different abilities, different messages, and i cant wait for people to see the concept live this year. Its some midnblowing stuff and it honestly shocks me every time i say it out loud that i have the ability to do it. Im very proud of the way i can play many instruments, which goes with the pop star asthetic im building, where that artist is an amazing musician who produces his own records and is an amazing guitar player, getting there at least. Im also proud of how i havent physically written a song since 2021 and i dont plan on doing it for the rest of my career. I have freestyled every song ive ever made since basically when i started recording music things just felt better that way. I think the way i seperate the art and approach all of the genres, and “alter ego” artists differently is gonna seperate me from everyone years to come
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The whole idea of being an entrepenuer and a creative is a risk, if youre not ready for that then this isnt for you. Theres a high chance that you wont make it in this field of interest. But i myself cant see me doing anything else but this, Ive decdicated my life to this and its all or nothing for me. But i firmly believe in myself and i know for fact that Im going to make it in this field. The risk is losing that fun time to grow up and do normal young adult things because youre constantly working, constanlty peroforming, constantly in the studio, constantly having to meet new people that can drain your battery. And if you do all of those things and have no plan B then youre cooked. But i can proodly say i have no plan B this is how im going to make my living and im not gonna just get by im going to thrive in the field and make a major impact..
