We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any business, our journey has had its challenges, but none as significant as the loss of our founder, Kathy Haugen. Her passing in a tragic car accident was a profound loss, both personally and professionally. Kathy’s vision and leadership were the foundation of Haugen Consulting, and navigating the company’s future without her was an immense challenge. Brendan had to step into the CEO role unexpectedly, balancing the weight of that loss while ensuring the company remained strong and stable.
We also faced a major test in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted industries worldwide. Like many businesses, we feared we might have to shut our doors. Instead, we made the decision to transition to a fully remote model, a shift that not only preserved our business but ultimately strengthened it. Productivity increased, team morale improved, and we found new ways to collaborate and serve our clients more effectively.
While the road has not been easy, these challenges have shaped us into a stronger, more resilient company. Through loss, uncertainty, and change, we have remained committed to delivering industry-leading expertise and support, honoring Kathy’s legacy while continuing to evolve and grow.

In business, challenges are inevitable—whether it’s navigating the unexpected loss of our founder, adapting to a global crisis like COVID-19, or stepping into new leadership roles. Each challenge has reinforced the importance of staying flexible, making informed decisions, and finding opportunities for growth even in the most difficult circumstances.
We also learned that embracing change can lead to unexpected advantages. When the pandemic forced us to shift to remote work, we initially feared it would disrupt operations. Instead, we saw an increase in productivity, improved team morale, and a more efficient way of doing business. Similarly, stepping into new leadership roles after Kathy’s passing was not something we planned, but it allowed us to grow as a company and carry forward her legacy in a way that honors the foundation she built.
