Check Out Marie Martinez’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Martinez

Hi Marie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The band itself is new as a concept and in form, but we’ve known each other for over 10 years already with very little to no involvement in music writing. TV Dolls as a project stemmed from a separate surf rock group we started called The Cool Arrows. When the music evolved, it started to take shape into a different form that felt more organic and true to the music style we were most familiar with. The theme evolved into an emotion roller coaster ride that at times had left me in tears from how deep the words resonated within me. I knew at those intense moments we were writing something special that would reach beyond the words and music and that would help carry a clear feeling for those experiencing the music with us.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I want to believe it has only because of how far we’ve gotten but reflecting back on the whole journey so far, it hasn’t been. I wouldn’t say the struggle has come from within the band but rather independently from one another. At times, we’ve struggled to figure out what we want for ourselves without sacrificing the passion for the music. Slowly, we have figured out what entices us the most to continue on and in part, that has really solidified the bonds within the band. At the end of the day, we are, and have been friends first which has helped balance the art and our personal endeavors.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We all of our day jobs that help fund all the nice toys we get to play with. As a whole, we have 2 retail managers, 1 chemistry teacher, and an architect in training within the band, which makes for an interesting combination of people. Within my professional music career, I’m known as one of the two front persons in the band and do vocals and play the guitar. What I am most proud of is our band being recognized in the Houston Chronicle as 1 of 22 Houston music acts to catch in 2025! I never ever thought I would ever have a feature in anything and so seeing our faces in the paper is almost surreal. What sets us apart from others? That’s really difficult to answer. I don’t see anything we do that others aren’t already doing on their own. If anything, I’d say it’s our song writing process sets us apart from others. Each song takes a long journey before it reaches any ears for people to hear. Each song takes a good 3-6 month process before anyone in the band gets to hear it! Erwin is the main writer within the band with our producer Siraj having his hand on the project as a whole. They tend to workshop all the details making sure the music aligns to the ethos of the album, though they have to run the lyrics by me first as well! Haha! By the time people get to experience the song, it has gone through, at minimum, 25 versions and 6-10 months of listening. Our upcoming debut album will feature 10 songs, but we’ve written over 65 songs to get there!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Our day jobs. They tend to be shocked to hear what we all do for a living, though we wish our answer could be that it’s playing music all the time.
