Today we’d like to introduce you to Mylan Kennedy
Hi Mylan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello,
My name is Mylan Kennedy and I am a freelance model and dancer from Houston, TX. Many may not know that I started out in sports (volleyball) in my youth and throughout high school and college. I believe that in a way, sports made the transition into modeling and dance seamless as both require fitness, practice, an audience, and performance. I have always been into the arts but never had the time to pursue it earlier on due to the demands of being an athlete. After college the passion for more creative endeavors naturally rose up again and started a new fulfilling journey for me. I began this journey on a serious note in 2020 which was a very eye opening time . I decided to dive into my creativity during the pandemic as there was a lot of time to reflect and try new outlets. I started with modeling and freestyle dancing before taking choreography classes for fun and becoming comfortable with the craft through the help of other talented dancers and artist. As I began to dive into my hidden passion for art, modeling, dance and music little by little, tapping back into the fun I had with these areas as a child, doors of collaboration and opportunity became available to me. I have been able to work with many talented individuals and brands due to my willingness to try new things and having fun plus faith in the process. I’m very grateful that I have been able to showcase and share my talent with others as well as curating safe spaces to express myself and build my confidence and meeting my community of other talented individuals.
I have always been very versatile regarding my personality, music style, and taste coming from a diverse family. I love a music mixture of hip hop, r&b, dubstep, edm, and alternative. My fashion style can range from very playful to chic and monochromatic/alternative . As far as books and movies, sci fi, fantasy, thriller/horror are my favorite genres. Some of my special interest include cosplaying, gaming, analyzing movies/film , singing, writing, and travel. I love the freedom I have gained through exploring these areas and returning to a childlike mind state of creating for fun. I look forward to continuing this journey and meeting more like minded people along the way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The main challenge I faced with pursuing my creative journey specifically was the unpredictability of it all before getting the ball rolling. Things like doing collaborations before seeing results of my labor, finding quality representation, mentorship, and consistency. But it was all a part of my development. It can be a risk to take a more unconventional approach to life and freelancing but it can also be equally rewarding after seeing your investment in yourself come to the surface. Finding a good work life balance became important while I navigated the creative field one goal at a time. Also overcoming the need to be “perfect” rather than authentic was a game changer for me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I enjoy working on a variety of projects so it is hard to choose one thing alot of the time! I truly am a jack of all trades which can be a very complex task. Modeling and dancing are my main areas of focus but I have other special interest as stated before. I also instruct choreography as of recent and volleyball lessons which I am grateful for.
The thing that I am most proud of is that I have had the opportunity to discover myself and my individuality in a new ways while meeting so many talented and supportive creatives in this community. I have had the opportunity to work along side local and established artist in the industry just from having fun and believing in myself . I’m also proud of the quiet times I spent creating alone and not attaching myself to outcomes. This has lead me to having full circle moments that I will always remember. I’m super thankful for all of the other local and out of state creatives, influencers, dancers, dance studios, and venue spaces, that have helped me grow over the years.
A few highlights that have come about as a result of following my passions include but not limited to:
•Dancing alongside Neyo in concert as well as other world renowned DJs at festivals/concert venues through my entertainment management team.
•Being on set for a short scene in Sick Mode music video Drake/Travis Scott.
•Appearing on Nick Cannons MTV WildnOut Tour casted by Lala Means and J Mulan.
•Meeting Americas Next Top Model Nigel Barker at a fashion show in Houston for Negris Lebrum.
•Walking for Emmy Winner and Project Runway Designer Nick Verreos as well as director of Art Hearts Fashion Erik Rosete.
•Gogo/ambiance performances and promotional modeling at different entertainment venues/events. (upscale cocktail lounges, restaurants, concert venues).
•Brand ambassador/collab work for companies around the U.S. (fashion, lifestyle, fitness, hair , make up, etc.).
•Becoming a dance instructor in 2025!
•Creative writing.
•Networking with other talented creatives/influencers at events and galas.
I’ve had a couple of these moments that have motivated me to keep going and looking forward to more surprises. It still amazes me how my hobbies have made room for so many positive abundant experiences. I believe what sets me apart is not making any of these things my identity but rather an extension and gift which allows me to connect with God, myself, and others on a deeper level.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was very reserved yet well rounded. I enjoyed my time to participated in my hobbies like reading , gaming with family, listening to music, playing piano and dancing to all of my favorite songs and dance movies. Even early on I remember choreographing dances with my volleyball teams for fun without knowing it would transfer into my life later on as a creative outlet! Also, I was and still am very much an animal lover. Another special interest that has remained with me from then until now that I did not mention was the study of psychology and importance of mental health. This actually lead me to study this subject further in college and it has profoundly helped me understand myself and the world around me. The mixture of art and psychology has played a big influence on the content I enjoy today.
