Today we’d like to introduce you to Robbie Madison.
Hi Robbie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Madison Productions started many years ago in Charleston, South Carolina. I grew up in a musical family with parents who were music directors, producers, and performing artists. When I was a teenager, I began to organize and host my own shows and concerts. And then went on to study performance, and gained a masters degree and conducting. I started my business to be able to provide musical and artistic services for organizations who need them, with the hopes of helping to build platforms for artists, and preserving art, and culture in our world.
As a recording artist myself, I know that building careers within the performing arts can be quite challenging, so my company seeks to identify craftsman, and to help provide more opportunities for them to build sustainable careers through their art. We moved to Houston in 2021 in collaboration with the Houston Texans NFL organization. I provided music, and chaplain services for the players, coaches and staff, while collaborating with the local arts scene. Since then we’ve been able to collaborate and host musical programs with wonderful organizations in Houston.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are so many challenges with starting a business, especially within the performing arts industry. One challenge is the general Publix, limited perception of art, and what it takes to actually create. Art for most people generally stays within the category of a hobby, instead of a craft, therefore organizations tend to not, want to Allocate sufficient funds for the production of art. Therefore, an anrtist ends up, not being sustainable, which then hinders the further production of art. Artist , have to look for other ways to support themselves, which should not be the case.
Another challenge, is the provision of spaces to host events. Rental spaces of now becomes so expensive, that it Can be challenging to have a place in which to organize.
In general, another challenge is finding patrons or supporters of the arts. There are so many things that can be created, and momentum that can be built with the appropriate support systems in place. So our nonprofit organization (Madison Arts Inc.) is constantly looking for those who are passionate about the arts, and recognize its necessity, to become patrons, which will allow us to produce more opportunities that will serve more communities.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Personally, I, Robbie Madison, am known as a vocalist and songwriter. I have been performing for many years, in the genres of jazz, classical, musical theater, pop, rock, gospel, and contemporary Christian music. I have been blessed to be featured in many festivals, I’ve worked in a couple of film projects, and imp passionate about music education. In Houston, I have had the opportunity to perform tributes with concert organizations, featuring the music of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, Al Green, Al Jarreau, and so many others, but what has set me apart has been my versatility as an artist. Because of my training and jazz experience I am able to perform more complicated repertoire, as well as more commercial pieces, and I love it all.
We released an album called Live at Sambuca last year that made it to Number 2 on the jazz charts, and it was a great glimpse into some of the incredible artistry represented amongst the Houston Arts community.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I was blessed to have a plethora of great teachers with good hearts. I was an extremely shy kid, but my music directors recognized my gift early on and pushed me to allow myself to be seen artistically. Basil Kerr, Bill Long, Victor Varner, John Valerio, in South Carolina, I have to give tons of credit to. They not only believed in me, but they educated me, gave me opportunities, and inspired me to do the same for others.
My parents And grandparents were incredible artist and innovators that started organizations, and always were serving people and ways that port value into them. This shaped my life incredibly, and I am grateful to them as well.
