Today we’d like to introduce you to Jovān Rogers.
Hi Jovān , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My Journey to JovānTheeHairProfessor
As a child, Saturdays were special. I’d wake up to the smell of breakfast made by my mother, and just before she headed out for her hair appointment, she would kiss my forehead and promise to be back soon. When she returned, I was always astonished by the creativity and transformation of her hairstyles. Hair has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
Growing up as the only boy surrounded by women, I witnessed firsthand the magic of hairstyling—like straight hair turned curly with the help of a microwave. I would practice styling hair during recess and in my spare time, often convincing my girl cousins to play “hair salon,” where I was, of course, the stylist. One day, my aunt said, “You’d make a great hairstylist.” That encouragement lit a spark in me, and I began to refine my skills.
When I enrolled at Booker T. Washington High School, I was thrilled to find they had a cosmetology program. But when I expressed interest in joining, I was discouraged by the teacher and turned away. That wasn’t the first time I heard “no,” but I knew in my heart that I was destined to be a hairstylist.
At the age of 30, after years of working a corporate 9-to-5 job, I made a life-changing decision. I enrolled at Paul Mitchell The School in Houston. For the first time, I found my tribe—people who spoke my language of creativity and expression. Using my hands, I finally got to tell my story through hair.
After completing cosmetology school, I was offered a position at Paul Mitchell during the COVID-19 pandemic, working the front desk, managing scheduling and enrollment. A year later, I was honored with the opportunity to become an educator. Completing that course felt like just the beginning.
Over the next two years, I was fortunate to teach abroad with Paul Mitchell in Madison, Wisconsin; Normal, Illinois; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Each experience strengthened my belief that this is where I belong—educating, inspiring, and sharing the beauty of hair with others
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to purpose is rarely paved without obstacles. My journey has been anything but easy, and truthfully, I still encounter challenges today. From being underestimated by fellow stylists to navigating harsh criticism on social media, and even facing unconscious bias and the sting of canceled payments— every setback has tested my resilience. But through it all, my faith in Christ remains my compass. He continues to lead me with grace, reminding me that every trial is shaping me for something greater.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a licensed cosmetologist and certified instructor with a deep love for the artistry and craft of beauty. My expertise spans customized color, precision haircutting across all textures, natural styling, silk presses, and a variety of extension services—including K-tip installation and maintenance, tape-ins, sew-ins, and wig installs. What sets me apart isn’t just my skillset, but the experience I offer in the chair.
As a Black man in this industry, I’m especially proud of never giving up on myself. We aren’t always given the space to pursue our passions freely, but my parents instilled in me the power of tunnel vision—staying focused and resilient, no matter the challenges.
People who know me will tell you: I’m not just a stylist—I’m an experience. Sitting in my chair means more than a transformation on the outside; it’s real connection, conversation, and a whole vibe.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising that even people who know me might not realize is my passion for old cars and the art of restoration. I love diving into the mechanical side of things—rebuilding engines, getting old parts to work again, and just bringing a classic car back to life. It’s something I find incredibly rewarding, and it combines my love for engineering with a bit of nostalgia
