Life & Work with Julissa Quevedo of Humble, Tx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julissa Quevedo.

Hi Julissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a licensed home based Esthetician. I’ve been an esthetician for 4 years, after graduating from esthetician school I worked at a spa for 2 years. I wanted to gain more experience and knowledge before opening my own practice.

I started off as a makeup artist at Sephora, shortly after that is when I found my love for skincare. I really found myself falling in love with the way that avid skincare makes people feel good about themselves first and foremost, and also the importance of the regenerative effects it carries. People tend to believe that it’s a luxury, but i’m of the opinion that it’s a necessity. It’s not just skincare, it’s self care. Understanding my own skin was another big revelation in my journey. My skin has always been very sensitive and I never knew why. As I started to learn more at Sephora, I began to somewhat understand my skin but was curious to learn more. That’s when I learned what an esthetician was.
Now as an esthetician I can help myself and others with their skin concerns.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the first struggles I encountered was when I was fresh out of esthetician school. I thought I was going to be taught more than just the basics, unfortunately I wasn’t. I had to learn a lot on my own or through the job I had at the time.
Once I had more knowledge I decided to go solo and operate out of my house. I was nervous at first about being home based but a lot of my clients prefer a home based service provider.
Building clientele has been the hardest part. Like I said before, a lot of people believe it’s more of a luxury than a necessity. A lot of people also don’t know much about their own skin and don’t know where to start.
I began doing pop up markets, it helped me interact with clients and give them more knowledge on their skin.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a solo licensed esthetician.
I specialize in facials and waxing. I would say I’m known for my facials and how knowledgeable & relaxing my facials are. Some of my proudest moments have been when I first decided to become solo and when I started getting first clients after becoming solo. More recently my proudest moment was this past weekend, I was invited to a girls night to provide facials.
This is also a very big moment for me, my first interview as a small business owner!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My best advice is networking with other estheticians! A lot of the knowledge I have today is because of all the wonderful estheticians that have guided me along the way. Get on facebook and join every esthetician group you can find in your area.
Don’t be afraid to believe in yourself and chase after your dreams. I was so terrified to become solo that I put it off for so long but now I love what I’m doing. Everyday that I get to do a facial or wax someone and they leave my spa feeling confident it brings me an abundance of joy.
