Meet Eva Sek of Pierogi Queen in South

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Sek.

Eva, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We moved to Houston from Chicago in 2013, born and raised in Poland. Trying to find any Polish food, which is so popular in the northern United States was challenging. We noticed there was a lack of Polish food in Houston. I was looking for business ideas and always liked cooking, so naturally opening a Polish restaurant came to mind. So, here I am trying to introduce Texans not only to our food but also to Polish culture and traditions. I do not want to run boring, old fashion Polish restaurant. I want it to be interesting. I want to show the rest of the world how great we as a nation are. We have a lot to offer. On our walls we have a gallery of pictures showing the beauty and modernity of our country. The dishes we serve are not only the old, well known dishes like Pierogi and stuffed cabbage (golabki) but also new dishes popular in Poland nowadays, sometimes with Texas twist. We also play Polish music trying to represent Polish community in Houston in the best way we can.

The food? It Is always made fresh in-house, we do not use frozen, canned food or enhancers. Just like at Babcia’s home. The restaurant exists not even two years and we already have some great achievements. In December 2016, we were nominated by Houston Chronicle #9 best new restaurant. Shortly after that, in January 2017, we were reviewed by Alison Cook which was an honor. Another surprise came when we found our restaurant among the top 100 restaurants in 2017. We have came a long way and are still growing as a business. We would like people interested to know that we are a dine in restaurant but we also offer delivery and catering.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being such a unique restaurant is a blessing and a curse. It is difficult introducing people to new food, especially in a region that seems to live entirely on BBQ and Tex-Mex. If a customer comes in and knows Pierogi, it is easy. But there have times when people have come inside the restaurant just to turn around and leave because nothing on the menu sounded familiar to them. Other than that, I say things are going smoothly, a couple good employees helps a lot.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We make authentic, traditional style Polish food. Polish food like any cuisine, varies by region so some of the things we make are prepared differently than what others are used to. We also have some dishes that use ingredients familiar to us but that are not truly authentic (such as our “Polish fries). We are proud of our publicity in the Houston Chronicle and being named in the top 100 Best new restaurants. We are the only place doing this style of food in our area.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This is a great place for a restaurant to start out. No matter the cuisine, Houston is a melting pot of different people and the food they bring with them.
