Today we’d like to introduce you to Luigi Paez.
Hi Luigi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a Petroleum Engineer by profession and had a career in the industry for nearly 30 years. I always had a passion for photography and videography. In 2020 I took my hobby one step further, I started Luigi Photography, a company mainly targeting social photoshoots such as weddings, engagements, graduations, events, etc. Most of my education in the field has come from online courses with photographers like Joel Grimes, Gavin Hoey, Pye Jirsa, Rikard Rodin and John Gress and of course, hands-on practice.
I recently retired from my job in the oilfield, so I am 100% focused on Luigi Photography and looking at expanding the portfolio to include corporate and commercial photoshoots. Also, I have started Luigi Films, another “Luigi” brand that I hope will bring quality and affordability to video making.
I know the probability of success for entrepreneurs is very low, but nevertheless I am willing to take my chances; at the end of the day, when you work on what you like doing, you will not have a day of work the rest of your life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! The main challenge is competition. Photography is now available to the masses right in their own hands. Camera cellphone technology has evolved so much, that someone with a basic knowledge of photography can produce images that look professional. Also, there are many professional photographers competing for business, it is hard to build a profitable business.
Another challenge is the emerging of AI technology. Graphic designers have so many options to generate content that would not require an actual photographer involved; the market for a photographer is indeed shrinking.
Nevertheless, there is still business to be had, and photos to be taken, and Luigi will be there for that.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am specialized in off camera flash photography and the retouching of subjects. If you look at my work, this is what sets me apart. The images produced this way require not only specialized equipment (beyond a cellphone camera, flash lights and modifiers) but the technical knowledge on how to use it. Mastering this requires studying, practice and dedication.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Houston is a metropolitan city, this makes it culturally rich. I love the food variety that can be found, as well as the emphasis on the arts. We have fantastic theaters that show world class performances as well as wonderful museums. I particularly love the museum of fine arts, of which my wife and I are members.
A big city like Houston would have crime associated with it, particularly more of an issue in certain parts of the city that perhaps should be avoided. The suburbs though, tend to be more peaceful and safe.
