Rising Stars: Meet Allura Abyss of Houston, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allura Abyss.

Hi Allura, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I went to my first burlesque show in 2020 and was blown away by the glamour of it all. One of the performers booped me on the head with her feather fan and I was so inspired. Never did I think I could be on stage, but I wanted to. 4 years later, I would be on that same stage.
In 2024, I debuted through the Houston Divine Studio showcase after taking classes for a couple of months. It all seemed like a whirlwind; suddenly I was in this whole new world with friends and peers I’d always dreamed of wearing costumes I always dreamed of. I still have to pinch myself sometimes.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I started rather abruptly because if I hadn’t, I would’ve talked myself out of it. It’s taken a lot from me to push myself out of my shell and deal with body dysmorphia and imposter syndrome.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Being a burlesque dancer is a bit like being something from a bygone era, something that isn’t really of this time, but it’s also about making that work in quickly changing times. People have some misconceptions about it, but at the end of the day it’s an art and art can mean anything. One thing most in burlesque will say is that it inspires confidence in yourself; physically, creatively. It’s an amazing vehicle for body autonomy.

As a burlesque dancer, I love the classic aesthetic— feathers, rhinestones, velvet, satin and red lips. I like to say I’m like a starlet from the 1940s who was also a vampire. Dita Von Teese and Morticia Addams are probably my biggest inspirations and I get the comparisons a lot.

I’m most proud of getting to be a part of a community full of such bright, creative and supportive humans. Burlesque is a fairly small community and it requires a lot of connection and community to survive. I am so thankful to have been welcomed into that. I’m also proud of making a dream of mine a reality— how many people can say that?

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My burlesque mother, Lady Annabelle, who owns and runs Houston Divine Studio deserves the creator for any success I may achieve. She’s an amazing performer and mentor who inspires me greatly, from being a performer and buisnesswoman to being such a kind soul.
I’m also incredibly thankful to the Houston Burlesque community in general, which contains so many amazing artists. They’re all an inspiration. My peers and friends in the community are what keep me going.
