Hi Zaria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello my name is Zaria, and I’m a 22-year-old hairstylist and entrepreneur based in Houston, Texas. My journey with hair began at the age of 10, when I first learned how to braid. By 15, I was already styling friends and family, slowly turning a passion into a skill set that would shape my future. At 17, I embraced the life-changing experience of becoming a mother. During that time, I began braiding hair from my mother’s home. I started sharing my work on Instagram, though I’ll admit, my consistency wasn’t where it needed to be, which limited the growth of my clientele in those early stages.
At 19, I made the decision to pursue a career in the medical field and enrolled in a medical assistant program. My business wasn’t thriving the way I had hoped, and I felt the need to seek stability. However, when I became pregnant with my second child at 20, complications during my pregnancy led me to request medical leave from school. Unfortunately, my request was denied. It was a difficult moment, but my late uncle continued to remind me of my true gift—doing hair. With his encouragement and my own growing realization, I made the decision to step away from the program and return to the beauty industry.
In 2022, after giving birth to my son, my family experienced a significant hardship—we became homeless for a couple months due to unresolved issues with our apartment complex. It was one of the most challenging periods of my life, but I’m forever grateful to my mother for her unwavering strength. Through it all, I held onto my faith and trusted that better days were coming. Eventually, we found a new home. Sadly, shortly after, I lost my uncle—one of my greatest supporters.
In 2024, inspired by his belief in me and my mother’s resilience, I enrolled at The Hair Mayor Beauty College in Missouri City, TX, to formally pursue my cosmetology license. Balancing school, motherhood, and work was not easy, but I remained focused. That same year, I rebranded my business as Lavishhairstylez, rooted in the belief that hair is a crown and deserves to be treated with care, quality, and luxury. At Lavishhairstylez, every client receives more than just a style—they receive an experience, I believe healthy hair begins with proper care and premium products.
I’m incredibly thankful to Ms. Paulette, who has been a consistent source of support throughout my journey. Her guidance helped me stay grounded and motivated during the most demanding times.
Now, in 2025, I proudly operate my own salon suite in Houston, TX, and will officially receive my cosmetology license in May. I’m excited for what lies ahead as I continue building my brand, perfecting my craft, and providing my clients with an unforgettable experience that celebrates beauty, strength, and self-confidence.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road hasn’t always been smooth, but I’ve learned that every challenge is preparing me for something greater. This journey doesn’t have a finish line—it’s about growth, resilience, and continuing to rise, no matter what !!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in sew-ins, quick weaves, tape-ins, wig installations, and
occasionally braids. What sets me apart is not only having my cosmetology license but also my commitment to ensuring a premium experience for my clients .
What matters most to you? Why?
Healthy hair is essential, and as Black women, it’s important to recognize that our hair can grow long and thrive witr the right care. Many women neglect regular trims or leave hairstyles in for extended periods, which can be detrimental to the health of the hair, depending on the style. Additionally, not all hair care products work the same for everyone. My goal is to guide and addertend chett, ir hair try needs
for optimal growth and health. I’m here to support and teach them every step of the way!!
