Check Out Nisha Sangani’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nisha Sangani.

Hi Nisha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I would love to thank Voyage Houston for this wonderful opportunity!

Ever since I was little, I loved to dance, which is why my parents enrolled me in classes to deepen my connection with it. At the time, Musical.ly was very popular, and I would spend hours creating videos, which helped me get into my groove. When Musical.ly transitioned into TikTok, I naturally continued making dance videos, something I always enjoyed.

During my senior year of high school, I wasn’t sure what career path I wanted to pursue, but I knew I had a strong interest in business—particularly marketing and its creative aspects. I sought advice from my parents, sister, advisors, and teachers, realizing that I had always loved expressing creativity but just didn’t know how to channel it. By my junior year of undergrad, I had gained a significant following on social media, and brands started sending me PR packages. I vividly remember the excitement of receiving my first PR package—it was the moment I truly realized what I had accomplished and that my dream was to become a content creator and influencer.
Beyond dance, I had always been passionate about makeup. Since childhood, I loved experimenting with different products, and as I started creating content, I leaned into beauty as well sharing “Get Ready With Me” videos, skincare tutorials, everyday routines, and makeup recommendations. I was never a fan of heavy foundation, so I experimented with different products to create a natural, glowing look. Once I found something that worked, I loved sharing it with my friends and followers.

On the dance side, when I got to undergrad at the University of Houston, I knew I wanted to join a competitive dance team. I became part of Roarin’ Raas, a traditional Indian dance team, for three years—first as a dancer, then as a board member, and finally as captain in my last year. I had trained in Bollywood and Kathak (Indian classical) as a child, but I wanted to explore a new style that connected me more with my Gujarati culture. Being part of a competitive college dance team taught me so much—I grew not just as a dancer but as a leader. As captain, I gained experience in choreography, teaching, managing a team, working with different personalities, staying committed, and competing across different states. The friendships, memories, and lessons I gained from Roarin’ Raas are priceless.

During undergrad, I decided to pursue a degree in Marketing, as it aligned perfectly with my love for creativity and business. As graduation approached, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to pursue a master’s degree, but after many discussions with my parents and my twin sister, Nikita, I decided to apply. My sister and I have always been each other’s biggest supporters, especially in my journey as a content creator. She has always encouraged me to push my creativity further, and along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with brands like Wonder skin Beauty, Kulfi, Bubble, Wake make, Kaja Beauty, and Milk Makeup. I can’t wait to work with more brands and spread the love of beauty. When I got my first acceptance letter from NYU, I was overjoyed. Attending NYU had been my dream since college I knew it would help me grow as both a marketer and an influencer. The best part? My sister also got in, and we continued our journey together in NYC.

Moving to New York has been a life-changing experience. I’ve made incredible friends, built connections, attended brand events, and even leveled up my dancing skills. Being in NYC has allowed me to explore myself more—both as a creator and as a professional in marketing. Since day one, dance has always been my way of expressing emotions. In stressful situations, dancing is my escape, my therapy. All my friends know how passionate I am about it—I honestly don’t know what I’d do without it.

One of the best parts of being in NYC has been meeting other creators and sharing experiences with them. It’s inspiring to connect with people who have the same passion and drive. If there’s one piece of advice I’d share with other dancers, it’s this: “Take all your emotions and energy into every movement. Don’t stress about perfection, just move, and it will come naturally.”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I did face some struggles along the way. For instance, during my junior year through the first semester of my senior year in undergrad, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be captain of my Raas team because I was more of a shy introvert at the time. However, my love for dance and my desire to push myself led me to go for the captain position to gain leadership skills and learn how to handle difficult tasks. Once I became captain, I learned so much—not just about leadership, but also about defending myself in challenging situations, teaching effectively, bringing my team together, and guiding them through struggles to ensure everything ran smoothly. Through this experience, I didn’t just become more extroverted; I truly understood what it means to be a leader and how to grow from challenges, setting a foundation for future opportunities. I want to motivate others to put themselves out there, be as confident as they can be, and inspire girls within the Indian community to find the encouragement they need to follow their dreams.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am currently in grad school at NYU SPS, studying Integrated Marketing, where I’m learning how to combine technology and marketing to create impactful strategies. I love it here, and I’m incredibly proud of achieving my dream of attending NYU. Through my professors, career events, and brand experiences, I’ve gained valuable insights into what makes a great marketer. Beyond academics, I am known as a content creator, influencer, and dancer, and I’m also exploring fashion. I specialize in creating engaging content on TikTok and Instagram, blending creativity with strategy. What I’m most proud of is not only getting into NYU but also making the most of my education while growing as a dancer and influencer, both in NYC and my hometown, Houston.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When it comes to finding a mentor, I believe the best mentor is someone you genuinely look up to—someone who inspires you and is on a similar path, offering guidance based on experience. A great mentor should challenge and support you, helping you grow both personally and professionally. As for networking, the key is to step outside your comfort zone and actively seek out opportunities. Attending career and networking events has been invaluable for me this approach has personally worked, as I’ve made meaningful connections that have opened doors I never expected. Simply showing up, having conversations, and being open to new people can lead to incredible opportunities—you never know where life will take you!
