Today we’d like to introduce you to Junior Ochoa.
Hi Junior, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Starting days was my teenage years as a dream to own a tattoo shop one day so I started practicing on my friends and family pretty much till I went through some health issues were I couldn’t work in the plants anymore so I decided to pursue my career in tattooing finally full time and at a professional level I started at a local shop just starting in the area they hired me immediately because of my known name in the area I eventually became a part owner there but didn’t last longer than a couple years later I ventured to a street shop on i10 that was very well established at the time so I ended up there in the east side of Houston for 13 years and made a name for myself I’ve been published in other magazines and have multiple tattoo models with my work on them also , I unfortunately went through more health issues were I had to have multiple amputations and ended up in bed rest and wheelchair over a year that’s when I had operated at my home studio just dealing with personal clients and dealing with private appointments it was that moment my wife and I decided to open our own family based tattoo shop I like to show that you don’t have to be a drug user or felon to be an established and successful business owner/ tattoo artist in this industry it’s the usual stigma and I want to show people a different way so I now have multiple artists that I’ve been working with for on and off fifteen years now that work for me and follow the same guidelines I put in place for them and it shows in our customer service and repeatedly business we’ve been holding at pretty much 4.9/5 stars on google for over 5years now and we strive to keep our brand name irrelevant in this crazy industry and economy
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely a struggle having multiple amputations and now in kidney transplant list , shop was torn apart in the barel storm of last year I broke my femur and shattered it at my shop during the construction of it and ended bed bound for 6months out of the year my artist took my appointments and worked out of the back area and kept the name alive until I was able to return and have our shop back to normal so yeah it’s been tough but god knows what is meant for me and surely wasn’t done yet so here we are still thriving in the community and still pushing art
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Not only an owner but I am a professional tattoo artist/piercer and work alongside multiple artists I personally work by appointment only but do from time to time do walk ins and piercings especially when I’m asked to do so by multiple return clients I enjoy giving people the type of work they see in magazines and shows or TikTok lol in a small town at a reasonable price I don’t overprice like some bigger known artists, not to say their not worth it but I’m more for the everyday worker that wants that kind of work I personally enjoy realism and Chicano style and am very well known for my cover ups it is a difficult process and with the years of learning on my own and freestyle draw it’s help me develop my skill in many different styles from dot work to micro hair pigmentation also I enjoy helping people and have been for over 15 years now
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Being a family based business we often support our local businesses and community groups like joining our local parade participation in benefits and donation our time and resources to help everyone as much as we can we’ve sponsored a local orphanage and came together and helped with thanksgiving meals for them and crews also did Christmas for all the kids we had thrown a private car show for them and gave them gifts from the Christmas list they had for each child and we had a pizza party for them also it was a blast I didn’t post it online for legal reasons of course but we along side a local car club Latin Cartel from Baytown came together and made it happen beautifully for those kids
