Today we’d like to introduce you to John Blair.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I got my start in football at the University of Northern Iowa as a student assistant. That experience opened the door to an internship with the Miami Dolphins, where I got to learn from coaches like Nick Saban and Jason Garrett. From there, I began my coaching career at Iowa Central Community College. Over the last 18 years, I’ve coached at multiple levels — including winning a state title in Iowa and later coaching at one of Colorado’s most successful high school programs, Pueblo East.
A few years ago, I moved to Texas and continued teaching and coaching. I held my first quarterback camps through the school I was working at then — Walker Elementary — and that’s really where Blair Quarterback Academy began. What started as a couple of camps has turned into something much bigger.
Now, I teach at Knox Junior High and since September, I’ve put a full focus on growing BQA. Today, we train quarterbacks from the elementary level all the way through high school, helping them develop the tools, mindset, and leadership it takes to succeed. I built this with a teacher’s mindset and a coach’s eye — and everything we do is built around trust, accountability, and consistent, focused work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. The biggest struggle I’ve faced was having a stroke a couple of years ago. That changed everything. Physically, I couldn’t keep up with the 18-hour days that come with coaching in Texas, and that forced me to step back and rethink my path. It was tough to accept at first, but it pushed me to shift from the grind of full-time coaching into more of a training and development role — where I could still impact quarterbacks without sacrificing my health. That shift is what led to the full focus on building Blair Quarterback Academy.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Blair Quarterback Academy, the mission is clear: we do everything possible to help quarterbacks succeed on and off the field. We focus on full-scope development — from mechanics and defensive recognition to leadership and overall football IQ.
What sets me apart is my background. I’ve spent 18 years coaching at the high school and college levels, gaining firsthand experience in how to develop quarterbacks the right way. I’m also a teacher, and that matters. It’s taught me how to deliver complex material in a way that young athletes can actually understand and apply in real situations.
What I’m most proud of is seeing our quarterbacks grow — not just in their game, but in their confidence and presence. We offer both individual and group training sessions. Full details are available at www.blairqbacademy.com.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success in three clear ways. First, is the kid becoming a better quarterback — improving mechanics, decision-making, and overall understanding of the game. Second, is the kid gaining confidence both on and off the field — carrying themselves with belief and purpose. And third, are they learning life lessons, not just football lessons — things like accountability, discipline, and how to handle adversity. If we’re hitting all three, that’s success.
