Meet Brandon Walsh of Punk with a Camera in Humble

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Walsh.

Brandon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, ever since I was 10 years old I’d always been intrigued by film making when I received my first camera it was smashed in half from my father who ran it over on accident but it still worked. I wasn’t able to view any playback on the camera until I plugged it into the computer but I made the most of it making little videos here and there. When I did get into middle school and high school I took advantage of the film making classes to hone my craft. And at the end of high school, I adopt the name Punk with a camera after attending a bunch of shows taking photos in little videos here in there. We now make music videos for punk bands across the United States as well as are YouTube segment DIY sessions which is an opportunity for bands to come in and film 3 live videos that might normally not get the chance to get any videos made we want to use it as a way to outreach to our community to show them new music and hopefully get people more interested into making music to better increase our local scene & community.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not having any funding and being kids had its hardships especially whenever we graduated high school we stopped having the opportunity to use their gear. The first thing that I did was pick up a job at a local Best Buy and I would purchase what is called open box basically returns that would not be sent back to be destroyed yet sold at cheaper prices than they would on the regular sale for that’s how I picked up the two main cameras that we used today as well as various different lighting equipment sound, etc. We try and make each new video better than the last one and learn from our mistakes as well as learn to work with each other better and communicate, we’ve learned new ways, to light rooms as well as understand the way sound bounces just from trial and error!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’d like to think of it less of a company and more of a community because all I want to do is entertain teach and inspire. I think what really sucks is how much we care about the people who support us only recently have we actually started making revenue from the people who watch our videos, and we often spend most of that money mailing out free merch to our friends. While most people might try to make a profit off of their merchandise we would much rather give it to the people who want it because those who support us are the reasons why we grow and why we’re still trying at this they believe in us and it helps us believe in ourselves!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think the city is great for us, there’s a lot of parts of it that are entertaining to be in when it comes to music. It’s a social hub and culture hub there are more acts on the DIY scene that comes through Houston and most cities and we were extremely lucky for that.
