Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Calderon.
Hi Jose, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My parents came here from Mexico for a better life and for more opportunity. They settled in Houston, where I was raised along with my two sisters. I attended college at the University of Texas at Austin and it is there where I began to feel a passion for advocating for others. In my sophomore year there I began to volunteer at the Workers Defense Project, a non-profit organization aiding immigrant workers who were experiencing injustices in the work place. Following my graduation from college I worked for 3 years at another non profit organization where I assisted tenants who were being illegally evicted by their landlords and/or assisting them in getting repairs to their homes that their landlords were responsible for. I then returned home to Houston to attend law school at South Texas College of Law. Upon graduation, I worked at two personal injury law firms and traveled around the country handling wrongful death, defective product, 18 wheeler, and offshore accident cases. I learned a lot working at these two firms and eventually I realized that in order to better serve my clients I needed to start my own law firm. Starting my own firm was hard at first but I knew that if we worked hard and did right by our clients that we would succeed. This was particularly true because the hispanic population in Houston and Texas is under represented when it comes to attorneys.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles along the way was figuring out what I wanted to do for a living. They say they the average American college student changes their major five times. It was true for me, I had five completely different majors until my junior year when I decided I wanted to go to law school. Even in law school I was not sure what type of lawyer I wanted to be but I spent the summers interning at different law firms and figured out I really enjoyed representing individual people and personal injury law was a great fit.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a personal injury law firm handling all types of injury matters such as vehicle accidents, wrongful death, defective product, slip n falls, and work injury cases. We only take cases where we think we can help the client and what sets us apart from other firms is that we frequently collaborate with other law firms around the country when we believe it is in our client’s best interests.
How do you think about luck?
When people ask me how I got to where I am today, I tell them that of course I worked hard but I also had a lot of help from others and luck also plays a role in my success. The key is not to rely on luck and make sure when you do get lucky you are able to take advantage of the opportunity.
