Life & Work with Ashlee Young of Uptown Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlee Young.

Hi Ashlee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I interned for iHeartMedia (then ClearChannel) in college in Jacksonville, Fl. Then got hired as a part time board op, got hired in College Station, TX as a multi station PD and in 2018 got promoted to a Music Director / Middays position at 93.7 the Beat. From there, I gradually added more stations to my syndication and now am the National Music Director for HIp HOp and R&B for iHeartMedia and on 50+stations.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely a learning process. When everyone starts out you have your challenges, especially financially when you’re just coming out of college. But I slept on couches, floors, didn’t own furniture until 2020 (haha) but we made it work!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known as a radio personality or a music journalist.

On -air we only have so much time to keep you listening for the next song or tickets, but I love the long format process of an interview or telling someone’s story. YouTube, podcasts, whatever – I grew up watching “Behind the Music” and “Driven” or “Diary” documentary type shows and always wanted to create that once I got into this profession.

Now, it’s about building up to get to that opportunity!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
We’ve been shifting drastically since 2020, so I expect more of the same. You just have to be exceptional an really LOVE what you do to stay in it.
