Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelly.
Hi Shelly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started SK Design & Co. after being laid off from my corporate job, not long after becoming a mom. I began sharing my home on Instagram a few years before that just for fun—and to my surprise it began to pick up momentum and people started reaching out because they loved my style and wanted help with their own spaces.
What started as a creative outlet turned into a business built on thoughtful design, and making homes feel personal and functional.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has certainly been a journey with its share of ups and downs, especially launching this business as a new mom without nearby family support. I often found myself working during nap times and late at night, but that season also taught me to trust myself in a way I hadn’t before.
Even though I come from a business and consulting background, interior design felt like a calling more than a pivot. A lot of what I know didn’t come from formal training; it came from intuition, observation, and having a strong sense of what makes a space feel good to live in. Over time, I’ve learned to trust that gut instinct. There’s a reason people are drawn to my work; it resonates with them on an emotional level, and I don’t take that lightly.
Of course, I’m always learning and refining, every project brings new lessons, but I also know that the core of what I do has always been there. The vision, the attention to detail, the ability to see the potential in a space, that’s something I’ve honed through experience and a genuine love for the process.
Resilience, for me, has looked like continuing to show up, even when it’s uncomfortable or uncertain. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and even more excited for what’s ahead.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I help people create homes that feel like them, beautiful, functional, and full of personality. I’m known for using color in a way that feels elevated, not overwhelming, and bringing a sense of calm and sophistication to each space.
What I’m most proud of is the care I give every client. I really listen. I understand how deeply personal the experience is when you’re designing for someone’s home and I don’t take that lightly. Further I infused education in my approach I want my clients to know why I make the design designs I do so that it’s a collaborative experience.
What sets me apart is that I design for real life but never compromise on style.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Just start. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect, you’ll learn so much by doing. I spent too long overthinking and trying to make things look perfect but the truth is, clarity comes from action.
You grow by showing up, even when it’s messy. Mistakes will happen, but that’s where the best lessons are. Trust yourself and trust your gut, and give yourself permission to evolve along the way.
Pricing:
I offer a few thoughtfully designed service packages to meet clients where they are in their design journey. My packages start at $799, with more comprehensive options starting at $1,299.
