Hi Sarah , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hair has always been something I have taken an interest in since I was 6 years old. I never consider pursuing being a stylist as a career until the age of 27, when I decided to enroll in Paul Mitchell the School – Houston. Immediately after graduating, I joined a salon where I completed a 7-month apprenticeship. I hit the ground running as a full-time stylist in August of 2019. I took the time to learn to work with all textures of hair by obtaining multiple certifications in color, cuts, and styling which were foundational in my efforts to carve out a niche method for textured hair. In 2021, I created Curl Boss, LLC and opened my studio. At that time, my demand was so high it inspired me to create my own team of textured hair specialists. In 2022, I opened up my very own salon space, and it has been a dream! Nothing great comes easy, but I definitely feel like I am moving in my purpose.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall funding my education on an apprentice salary was extremely challenging. Oftentimes being the sole multi-ethnic stylist in the salon also brought about its own set of challenges. I was compelled to carve my own lane that catered to those with multi-ethnic hair. The biggest challenge by far is being a sole proprietor and being responsible for a team of employees. The benefits far outweigh the challenges. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
