Exploring Life & Business with Melissa Trivette of DuLany Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Trivette.

Hi Melissa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Prior to founding DuLany Design, I spent 15 years in advertising and global marketing.

I was expecting my 3rd child during the pandemic, and experienced a life threatening complication at 35 weeks. Then unexpectedly, I was laid off two weeks after returning from maternity leave in 2021. This was a turning point for me and I decided it was time to pursue a career that served my family instead of sacrifice it.

I’ve always been interested in health and wellness, but when I founded DuLany Design I began learning about things in our homes that can impact our health. Formaldehyde in manufactured woods, PFAS in stain repellant fabrics, and microplastics in synthetic textiles. I saw an opportunity to educate my clients about the benefits of incorporating wellness design into their homes.

I merged my business experience, love for design, and passion for wellness to create DuLany Design’s unique approach to design.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting DuLany Design was the easy part. I leveraged my business experience to implement clear process, communication, project management, and a focus on building strong, lasting relationships with my clients.

Initially, growth was slower than I expected. I knew it would be hard pivoting to a new industry, but thought my marketing background would make things a little easier. It’s taken three years to get established, however, it’s allowed me to be very intentional about my values, business goals, and choosing projects and clients that align with them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
DuLany Design is a full-service residential interior design studio in The Woodlands, TX.

We believe a beautifully designed, healthy home is the foundation for life’s best moments. Our philosophy is to craft interiors that not only look stunning but also support your well-being.

We specialize in designing spaces that prioritize wellness and promote a sense of peace.

We invest in building strong, lasting relationships through trust, integrity, and communication.

We create unique, thoughtful interiors that reflect the personality and values of our clients.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
It’s really rewarding to create spaces for my clients that are both beautiful and improve their quality of life. Once I educated myself about wellness design, it gave me a sense of peace to know that I could make changes to positively impact my family’s health. I design healthier homes for my clients so that they may feel that same sense of peace.

I ran into a past client recently at Whole Foods. We designed an accessible office using lower tox materials for her husband who had recently been diagnosed with ALS. The client shared how much they love the office. They use it to gather with family, and as a holy space to take communion. For me there’s no greater honor than creating spaces for my clients that are both beautiful and healing.
